Hi,

This appears to be a great place for a person just starting out. My name is Tray and I am from Florida. I am married with one seven (7) year old son. My mother and brother are SSI certified. I have dived in no more than 12 feet of water on the Santa Fe river and love it! I received a gift certificate for father's day 2008 to get certified.

Apparently, I need to purchase mask, fins, snorkel, boots, and a weight belt so I am trying to do all the research I can to find some good ones.

I look forward to becoming a part of your community!

Take Care,

Tray

Well, hi!

This really is a great place to read up on and get advice about equipment, certification, where to dive, etc. Where in FL are you? Hopefully you'll be able to get down to the Keys and do some reef diving!

Welcome Diver....Split fins....that's all the advice you'll get from me at this time. You'll figure out about the snorkel thing. Conversation in the office....LOL.

Buy right ... buy once. Buy wrong ... buy twice (at least).
Expensive is not always better. Cheap is usually indicative of quality.

Mask (try it on!) make sure it fits right. The one that fits your face the most comfortable is the right one for you.
Fins (split is a great option) don't go cheap here.
Snorkel - unless you plan on doing a lot of skin diving and snorkeling, this is the place to trim a few bucks. You probably don't need the $99 wonder snorkel
Boots - I like a thicker sole. Fit your boots to your fins.
Weight belt. That's interesting. Don't spend a lot of money here. The ole trident weight belt will work for now until you decide what type of BCD you will want to buy.
I am surprised to not see timing device (dive watch or computer) on the list.

If at all possible try the gear out in a pool prior to purchase.

Best of luck! Enjoy the lifetime of adventure.
