You can tell you haven't done any diving yet. The majority of people diving look like refugees from the all you can eat dining hall.

Keep in shape, but you will do okay diving in less than peak condition.

One advantage of fitness is less air consumption and that is good.

Welcome to the neatest sport around!

Sounds like you guys had it easy!! When I did my OW at age 11, my instructor made me tread water for 10 minutes while passing a 10 pound weight around the circle of students. In all seriousness tho, anyone in reasonable shape will be just fine, enjoy it!

Just my experience.. and probably just mine.. but if you are using long fins.. and tend to move about more.. there is the problem of leg cramps..

Of course there is the banana regimine.. but if you would do some swimming with JUST fins.. no arm motion as a workout to prepare for diving, that helps!!! When you dive, you will find that arms are rarely used, and more for direction that anything.. Most, well, virtually all of your propulsion is from the legs.. and fins, the longer the worse.. can really take a toll you would not expect!!! I use to run, but are totally different muscles!

and... Very different from being a 'topside' swimmer....

Parham AKA deepedge...

Hi all. I am recently signed up for OW classes and look forward to my new hobby. I love the water. Snorkeling and Deep Sea fishing are my two favorite all time activities. SO I think I wil love Scuba.

Anyway. I am a big fitness addict and workout a lot. But I have not been in the pool or water since last summer. Should I consider getting in the pool some for a while and doing any type of conditoning for diving?

It won't hurt to swim a few laps. I am always amazed at how far just a little exercise goes with scuba diving. You don't need to be superman, but it certainly wouldn't hurt if you were. The less body fat the better. Period. Just do it baby.
