The pictures clearly show a metal barrel with a retainer clip, so I am pretty sure it is a G250.

Thanks for all the tips. I will let you all know how it goes.

I think there were some hibrids made in the transition from G250 to G250 HP. I seem to recall reading one of the experts here saying that the early HP's were built in the G250 body and later ones had a unique body. If your regulator has the knob retaining clip it is definatly a old style G250. There is still a good chance it will have a S-wing poppet because of the late date of manufacture. The G250 HP has more in common with the X650 than it does the G250, they might even use the same adjustment mechanism with a just shorter poppet in the X650.

The covers are pretty much interchangeable within a given size 2nd. I installed an S550 cover on an R290? so I would have the slot that makes it easier to store with the purge depressed. There are a bunch of covers in the R, G, and M series that can be swapped.

Here are the pictures. There is no sign of corossion or grunge anywhere, which is what I expected from the description. The seat is pretty engraved though. I thought the latest poppet came with two o-rings. This one only has one? Is it still the style where I can replace just the seat? I need to get an appropriate tool for the spline nut, so I haven't hooked it up to a hose yet.

You have an S-wing poppet there and a sweet looking regiulator. That lever also looks like the G250V version. If I were you I would go to VDH and get their G250 kit and do a full rebuild.

that is actually the precursor to the S-wing poppet which does have 2 o-rings in the balance chamber. But it should work fine until it develops a leak at the balance chamber or performance drops off. If the seat seals well and gives good breathing performance, I would not worry about a little engraving but try not to disturb the seat. And the orifice o-ring is also almost surely black so no special worry there. As long as it is performing well, I would dive it.

Can the seat be replaced on this one? Is it the same as the seat in the S-Wing poppet? Is the o-ring the same as one of the two o-rings in the s-wing poppet?

I didn't know there was a intemediate poppet, are you saying that this poppet has more issues with the balance chamber "O" ring than the old metal stem poppet?

The OP has the original all plastic poppet that came out with the G500 and ran for just a couple years. Contact surfaces with the barrel are different than the S-wing poppet as is the 2 balance chamber o-rings. The 2nd o-ring on the S-wing poppet acts as a scraper and probably helps protect from dire and sand damage. It was about that same time that SP went from a single o-ring with backup ring on the Mk20 piston to 2 o-rings. Again, the inner o-ring does the sealing while the exposed o-ring give it some additional protection. These kinds of improvements are relatively small, but when you build such reliable gear (as most mfgrs do) small improvements are about all you can hope for at reasonable costs.

I think you mean it has more in common with the S600. That's sort-of a G250HP in a smaller case.

I have a couple of these single o-ring s-wing poppets; they work fine and can take either the current 2.2x1mm o-ring or the older 2.5x1mm. The seat is definitely replaceble.

Test it: if it cracks at an inch or less, I'd dive it.
