I have been in water since the day I was born. I would swim for 12+ hours a day on the weekends as a kid. But one thing that scares me is that I have never been able to open my eyes all the way after they have been wet. I would always have to wipe them with my hands. I can open them under water and see (not the best but I can see). But when I come up out of the water and open them it's like water is trapped and it look all blurry. Does anyone have any tips or tricks that might help me?

No real biggy.....in scuba you wear a mask to protect your eyes from the surrounding water while under......durring your training you will do various skills that require you to flood and clear your mask of water (keep your eyes closed during these skills)....also you will remove and replace/clear your mask underwater---again keep your eyes closed and ask your instr. to say sqz. your arm when the water is clear from the mask. You surface with your mask on and it can and in many dive locations should stay in place till out of the water. Best of luck,,,,you should be ok.

practice. thats it. i had the same problem but i knew i had to overcome that.
the blurry ness goes away after you blink acouple of times.
when in salt water your eyes will burn like a mofo but just blink and your eyes will clear them selfs.
just go to the local ds and practice

Like I said I have been in water since I was born. My wife was also a competition swimmer and I think that we both will love diving. Now when we take our OW class should we pair up with other divers instead of our selfs?

Chris02 I see that you live in chicago is there a lot of dive spots in Ill. I live right on the mississippi river in Iowa. Right next to the quad cities.

I had the same problem, except I wasn't a competent swimmer. What the others say is true, you'll learn the skills you need and one is removing/replacing and clearing the mask. I started out keeping my eyes shut the whole time, and actually cleared the mask 3 to 4 times before I opened my eyes on each attempt. Actually I had it clear on the first time, just wanted to make sure that it didn't have any water in it. By the time I did my open water certs I kept my eyes open the whole time. Even my instructor was a little shocked at that. I have to admit, as stupid as it sounds, I practiced in my hot tub a couple of times. If my neighbors saw me in the hot tub with the mask and snorkel, I figure they think I've finally gone over the edge. (I have, but it was the edge of the pool.) hehe

Anyway, you'll get used to it, and it will be no big deal.

Chances are, you will be paired up together. The advantage to this is that as you will probably be doing a lot of your dives together after certification, it makes sense to get to know one another in the diving environment. If you are in a class of two, you won't have much of a choice in the pairing up choice.

However, good buddyship requires safe practices and consideration for your buddy - whether that person is your nearest and dearest or someone you just met. All this, along with equipment and health matters, will covered in the OW course.

Have fun, stay safe and enjoy the water

Ditto on the bathub trick. Start with nice clean warm water and ease into it. For the most part you won't have much need to open your eyes under water without your mask so it's not a big deal. Being human you shouldn't expect to have very good underwater vision. Your eyes need the airspace provided by the mask to foces.

As for dive class pairing up. There was a long thread that ran about 6 months ago that you may find. First though some instructors will split you up anyhow. The key seemed to be respecting each others independence. You cannot be helping each other. Each of you will be learing "life support" skills and must each master them. If you do get to learn together you will hit the water that much tuned as a buddy pair. Remember that some things come more easilly for ohers and if one of you needs some extra work on a skill you may be split for a while anyhow. Also working with others can be a great challenge I found.

My wife and I are asking for wet suits for x-mas from our parents. We live in Iowa and plan to dive maybe once a year in the tropics. Do you think we could get away with one suit for both locations I was thinking of getting a 3mm or a 3/2mm full suit. We would only be diving in the summer time in the Midwest. And last my wife is somewhat claustrophobic but she says it’s mostly when she can’t move. I told her that she would want to get a mask with a clear skirt. Any other advise for her that you guys have come across.
