I’m new to DIR-style diving and currently experimenting with my D12 setup. Looking for input from those with more experience.

Right now, I’ve mounted my V-weights on the outer/top side of the tanks (photos attached). I did try placing them on the plate side, but that made the lower tank band stick out too far. It caused some wobble, and I couldn’t get a solid connection between the backplate and tanks—even when tightening the wing nuts hard.

Has anyone run into the same issue? Are there best practices or mounting tricks that help get a snug, stable fit when using V-weights between the tanks and the plate?

Appreciate any thoughts or advice people are willing to share.

The V-weight should not be mounted under the tank band. You attach and tighten the bands to the tanks, then just slide the V-weight over the lower bolt - it's loose until you put the backplate on top and tighten the backplate with the wing nut.

Thanks!

Need to look into this; when I try that the plate ends up super wobbly and there is no connection between the tanks and the plate. 🫠

It might be the search for a better solution continues.

Out of curiosity.

Do people who use V weights only use them locally and try to locate them on trips.

I have seen v weights at some of the dive operators in Egypt, but not anywhere else.

If you ask if I am flying with my D12 and lead? No my diving is car based so don’t worry about transport weigh if that is what the question was. 🙂

That was the question. When we travel it is mostly by air. I was surprised when one of the divers on one of our trips actually packed some lead with her. She didn't think they would have those types of weights on the other end and they in fact did not.

If I would be traveling I probably going to rent tanks and just use a rental weighted belt.

It’s not likely that I will be diving anywhere with colder water than my home turf (live in Norway) so most likely it will be with less weight then my normal setup.

That's a lot of weight + steel tanks 🙂
They do have them in places that have aluminum twinsets for rent usually. Lots in Egypt.

North Atlantic water is a little colder then Egypt..

😅🥶

Winter time water is about 4-2 degrees c with surface air temp easily around from 0 to - 10

If i'm travelling and renting a twinset, i take two cambands with me. Thread the weights through the band and attach it to the lower end of the cylinder.
