Adventurer Divers and Sound Underwater Survey formally announce the identification of the shipwreck Trajan
In August 1867 the Maine built Bark Trajan put in at Newport Harbor with a fire in her hold. Within days she was given up to her fate and was resting on the Sea floor.
Starting with years of research and ending with a concentrated search in the Fall of 2008, the crew of Adventurer and Sound Underwater Survey announce the discovery of the long lost vessel.

Very interesting report of the discovery on that website, thanks!

I am glad you enjoyed it. It was a small project we had been working on and off for years. We finely had the resources to do it right.

It pays to gather information from old charts; where wecks get taken off of over time if they don't pose a threat to shipping. I can kick myself in the butt for not buying that old chart on the wall at the WatchHill Bookstore years ago (its gone now).

A nice piece of historical detective work in that story.

Was it an old NOAA chart? If it was, you can find it in the archival section of their
webpage. They have a whole list of downloadable charts for any geographical area you could ever need.

"in keeping with Rhode Island law, the pair didnÃÕ take anything from the wreck, and donÃÕ plan to. Instead, they videotaped their dive, took measurements of the debris field and now hope to share their information with others devoted to preserving Rhode IslandÃÔ maritime heritage,"

Kudos to those divers for respecting the preservation of wrecks.

Great article.

Very cool discovery! Thanks for sharing the web page and your findings. Very interesting scan and magnetometer data.

Cheers,

X

Jeesh John, you've been busy this year and knowing you I wondering how many more "secret wrecks" you've found that you haven't even told anyone about yet.

Anyway, good work. I am amazed with the amount of research and effort you put into that stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't even a single wreck that RIMAP "found" that you hadn't already dove before they got there.... :D

Well, there are wrecks we thought we found that have been found before as well.
I am sure somene over the years has seen the Trajan but didn't know what it was.
They are doing their thing and that is fine.
