Well there you have it, so now we know.
The dive shops need to be informed of this fact also so they don't continue to pass along false information.

Just going to throw this out there -- ever you ever considered confirming information that people tell you? :D

You don't just believe every chain email that someone sends you, right? I mean...you read it on the internet, or some emailed it to you, so it MUST be true! :shocked2:

Don't believe everything you read on The Internet. That's how World War I got started, you know.

Is this thread about the 8" diameter LP95, or the 7" diameter LP85?

How anyone could even remotely think that a 7" diameter 26" tall 31lb tank (LP85) could be "exactly the same" as a 7.25" diameter 24" tall 34lb (HP100) is beyond belief.

So where is this going and what is it exactly that you want from me???

Why don't you read the response word for word. Where did I say anything about an e-mail or internet.
I was told this by someone who should know better.

If you have the time to investigate every little detail of everything told to you during the course of a day more power to you bro. you got more time on your hands than I do.

The LP steel 85 is the exact same tank as the 3442 100. I looked at both in the store and they were identical size. They were also the same exact brand.

We must be thinking of different tanks. As I said above, the LP85 is a tall 7" tank and the HP100s, at least the ones everyone uses (faber FX100 or worthington X-7 100) are 7.25" and at least an inch shorter.

The LP85 is a classic doubles tank due to it's smaller diameter and neutral buoyancy when empty.

This info is very easy to confirm. The DOT 3AA spec is in 49 C. F. R. 178.37 located here:
http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/cfr_2006/octqtr/pdf/49cfr178.37.pdf

Each manufacturer has to have their own Special Permit for their HP tank design. Using the SP# stamped on the tank, you can look up the Special Permit here:
PHMSA - Special Permits List

Here is an example of one manufacturer's HP SCUBA tank Special Permit:
http://www.phmsa.dot.gov/staticfiles/PHMSA/SPA_App/OfferDocuments/SP9791_2007060054.pdf

If you compare the specs, you will see that they are very specific to the alloy composition, required material strength, allowed wall stress, heat treating, test procidures etc. Neither spec allows for stamping of individual failed cylinders to a different specification.

Some info on those steel 85's.
This is what I heard anyway but I don't know if it's 100% true or not.

The LP steel 85 is the exact same tank as the 3442 100. I looked at both in the store and they were identical size. They were also the same exact brand.

I have been told that the 85's are nothing more than 100's that didn't pass the stress test to become 100's so they make them into LP 85's.
The 100's are around $300 and the 85's are $230.
So for the exact same amount of metal, the same valve (except for the burst disc) they are charging $70 more for the 100 just because it holds more air, that's it.

Don't you just love it?
