The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission plans to unveil a new lionfish smart device app during a live Twitter chat from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 28.

To participate, sign in to Twitter and follow @MyFWClife or #FWCLionfish. Tweets should have have the #FWCLionfish in them.
Lionfish are a spiny, invasive species that have great potential to negatively impact Florida’s reefs and wildlife. Popular as aquarium pets, they were brought here by East Coast pet dealers and released by pet owners. Though divers first noticed them in the 1980s, the main lionfish increase in population has been since about 2010.

Lionfish not only prey on native species, they also compete for food with economically important species such as grouper and snapper, and they can disrupt the balance of native populations, ultimately causing a cascade effect that can alter habitats.

I copied and pasted the article in its entirety. I guess we shall see when fish and wildlife makes their announcement.

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Due to the fact that lionfish in the Atlantic don’t have predators, eat whatever fits in their mouths, and are naturally fast-breeders, wildlife officials encourage people to catch as many as possible. Now, there’s an app for that.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) unveiled a new Report Florida Lionfish app during a live Twitter chat Wednesday.

The app is just another measure in attempting to control the ever-growing lionfish population. Lionfish are an invasive species that are negatively impacting the state’s reefs and wildlife.

The app includes information on the invasive species, safe handling guidelines, and a data reporting form so that divers and fisherman can spread the lionfish wealth about their sighting or harvest with FWC.

All data uploaded to the app will be available to the public and shared with other groups and agencies with interest in this kind of information.

The first 250 users will receive a free interactive “Lionfish Control Team” t-shirt.

For more information, on lionfish, visit MyFWC.com/Nonnatives; click on “Marine Life.”

Wanting the t-shirt, I hunted around the link, but couldn't find the app. I will search from work at a more leisurely pace.

Dr Dive sez: There is an iPhone version. Search the App Store on Lionfish. Gives you the ability to log in your catch with details, a critical step in expanding the research database. If you come to the FL/AL coast to hunt, please report, on your own or on someone's instance. There are several other reporting mechanisms as well. Hunt em, kill em, grill em, and report em. Y'all come see us.

If you kill them, do you still report them?
