I appreciate the help in finding the right products. And I know that my size maybe an issue for some people. Luckly, I have friends and family that are perfectly comfortable diving with me.

As for the question at hand. I tried on a Zeagle Ranger but it cuts me in the back of the neck and even though the LDS said it would be OK in the water, I have my doubts. Too bad to because they were making me a great deal (435.00). I also tried on a OMS IQ (I think thats what it is) but that was almost $900.00 before tax and any extras. I really liked the feel of the OMS but I am worried about the bungies wrapped around the bag and I really did not like the price for something I may not end up using that much.

A LDS made the suggestion of a drysuit but they were quoting $2500.00 for a DUI custom. YIKES!!!!!! What have I gotten myself into?

Any comments or further suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Get comfortable diving in Neoprene.

If you really need dry for the temps, develop basic skills first. That takes more than just an OW Cert Class

Hi Kmorris,

Did you ask if you could try out the Zeagle BC in a pool? BCs do feel different when you are in the water with a tank on. Also, Zeagle does make their BCs as componants..you can order different shoulder harnesses and cummerbunds and kind of mix and match them until they fit. Ask you LDS about that.

As for the suits, you may want to try on some mens wetsuits too. Or Semi-dry suits, if they have them at your shop. Manufacturers still make womens suits to fit the typical "barbie doll" measurements, and I know alot of women that are more comfortable in men's suits.

Hope this helps some..and good luck!

I finally bit the bullet and ordered a 2 pc 6.5 farmer and 5mm jacket in a mens cut to go over my hips. The 5mm jacket will help me not feel so tight in the arms that I can't move. It ended up costing 379.00 with a titanium liner for the package and it is custom so it should fit me easily. I hope it works out.

I still am trying to decide on the BCD. I was able to find a cheaper price on the OMS and am kind of leaning that way. I would like to be able to try a few others but LDS's don't usually carry anything in my size.

Thanks Again for everyones input. It is appreciated.

Go with the backplate!!!!!!!!

It's the most adjustable BC on the market. If your weight changes, so can the backplate for about $20.00 in webbing.

Get a BC that fits you....not the other way around. You can pick and choose the parts of your backplate and harness and make it a "KMorris283 Special"

In addition:

Exceptionaly rude, ignorant and unproductive comment on weight on the part of Chiara. I would much rather have a dive buddy who is knowledgable and overweight than one who is lean and ignorant.

While weight is a factor in health it is not THE determining factor.

Exceptionally rude, ignorant and unproductive, yeah, right!

Has this person gone to see a doctor before ordering her equipment?

What IF the doctor says she can't go diving?

I do speak my mind, I can't shut up, perhaps this is not such a bad habit.

Last time I went through my annual check for scuba, my diving doctor said I'm overweight, and should lose some in order to be fairly fit for diving, and I weigh about half what is being discussed here.

Chiara-
Why don't you use your mind before you speak it?

You are very tacky. There are better ways of bringing up dive fitness other than saying:

"Really, I've seen overweight people, but not as much as you"

This board works well not only because of what we say but also how we say it.

What happens if she has a problem underwater?

I'm a Dive Master, but I doubt I could help her, not enough strength, sorry.

I would have thought that a dive master would know that a person with large amount of body fat was bouyant underwater, not to mention that he/she should be neutral underwater (if taught correctly by the divemaster) anyway.

Can I recommend spinach? :)

kmorris283..................

Your welcome to come dive with us anyday!

I'm not sure if our measly dive sites here in KY are worth the trip from CA though........

Thanks to both K4SDI and Buff for believing in someone that does not fit the ideal body weight.

I know that there are not many obese people that scuba but there are some (I have actually found a few local ones). I also, know that I will never be a tech diver or divemaster. But, I can go local and to some of the easier dive sites.

The ideal is for me to know what I can and can not do and not become over confident in my abilities. I can deal with that. I also know that being my buddy may limit what the other diver can do and I have and will discuss that situation with the person that I partner with. If they can except it so can I. Infact, my 12 year old son and I are being trained together so he is limited himself for awhile. At least until he reaches 15 years old and can get a regular PADI cert. It will all work out in the end with family and friends as built in buddies.
