Hi all, I am new to all this and have been wanting to become a certified open water diver for as long as I can remember so now I am going for it. Where I live there is water all around and lots of places to dive. I am going to call a dive center that has been around for over 25 years to find out what kind of classes they offer. I took a short class about 15 some years ago when I went to Maui on vacation to dive about 10 ft near some coral reefs and loved it. I am a volunteer with my local search and rescue team so I might like to get training in search, rescue and recovery. Is there anything I should know of in advanced or might want to ask when I call the dive center?

Welcome

Congratulations on taking the first steps toward an incredible life adventure!
Life's crazy, live it! Definitely interview the instructor, try to get a class where they don't have a "cattleboat" type of operation with a couple dozen students in one class. We only do smaller classes so you get a much better training experience.
If you ever need any advice or help, we're here for you. Good luck!

Welcome to the scuba board! Your enthusiasm for diving is welcome here :) Congrats on getting started. And to answer your question..... before you start your class, if you want to can look over the material that will be covered in the class, which would requre you to purchase the book early. Other than that, your fine.. just go into it ready to learn, listen well, and you'll be off to a good start. Be teachable, instructors love that kind of student.

Have fun.
