Key Largo would be a great destination for a new diver. Lot's of shallow reefs, great wild life and long bottom times. However, the operations we used did not provide a dive guide. I understand this is common in Fla. We hired a DM for our OW diver when we dove the Spiegel Grove because of the depth (awesome btw). We rented a house in Key Largo for the 4 of us and dove out of Conch Republic in Isla Morada.

If you want a diving get away and dive your brains out at a first class resort, Kura Hulanda in Curacao is my favorite. Boat dives plus a really awesome house reef (Alice in Wonderland) is a short swim from their dock. The onsite dive shop is freaking awesome and friendly, they send DMs on every dive.
