Wondered if anyone could tell me who I should contact in San Juan about diving in the ocean for the first time. I have been in a couple of fresh water springs in FL but no ocean experience yet. I am thinking it would be a good idea for me to go down with an instructor for the first time? I have all my own equipment lacking a dive computer. Would appreciate any feedback I can get.

Thank you!

I have not been to San Juan, but I would suggest having at least a dive master with you for your first dive. I suggest this for a couple of reasons. Fist off, for a first dive in a vastly different environment, it would be a good idea to have someone with experience in that type of environment, this includes any dives in other fresh water areas that you have not dived before. Secondly, you have to evaluate your own skill level and decide what you honestly can deal with. Thirdly, when a dive guide of any kind is with you, they will know the best places to see all the great creatures and structures. I would guess that your resort either has a dive operation within it, or they can refer you to one that is reputable. I am sure that someone here will also have some great suggestions. Have a great trip and tell us all about it when you return!

Tim

P.S. If you are going to be doing multiple dives over your vacation, or dive more in the future, I would highly suggest investing in a dive computer. If you use your dive tables correctly, and compare your dive times with a computer, you will see that your dive times will be extended with a computer and you will be able to enjoy your dives more.

Which particular San Juan would that be? I can think of 6, off hand. Puerto Rico?

I heard that the diving around San Juan is not very good. Very murky and little marine life. You have to go to the east coast of Puerto Rico to get any decent diving.

I recently spent some time in PR. I was in the SW, the diving was very good. From what I understand the SJ area is not the best the island has to offer. As was mentioned to the east is better, Fajardo, Vieces (sp). So, I guess it will depend on exactly where you will be and how long you will be there and how much time you will have for diving. the Copa Marina Beach Resort in Guanica has a first rate dive operation and resort hotel. Looks like a carribean postcard. It's about a 2 hour drive from SJ. You may want to check http://www.gotopuertorico.com, they have lots of info on all sorts of activities. Have fun and dive safe.

I have heard lots of talk about people having their gear stolen by airport people at San Juan airport, be carefull!

If you can get to the SW Side of the island, I would suggest Parguera Divers. If you speak some spanish, West Divers is also good. I've heard good things about Rincon as well, but I've never gone diving there

The diving in San Juan is.... errr.... not very good. Very murky and not much marine life. If that's your only choice for area, my dad's dealt with Ocean Sports before and he recommended them to me.

Yep, Parguera Divers are real good, I dove with them a couple of times, excellent operation. I never dove with West Divers, but I did buy some gear at thier shop and they were very helpful and prices were good. I think one of the DM's from Lemon tree divers in Rincon posts on the board. Don't have any direct experiance but the posting sounded resonable and genuine.
