I am proud to announce that we have canopy coming in at Long Point, Palos Verdes. We have been working on this restoration site since fall 2005. Many volunteers have come out and helped us remove urchins (182,000 to date), place transplants, place sporophyll bags, and monitor the progress. We have a canopy about the size of a basketball halfcourt right in the middle of our site!!! Yesterday, Ian and I were diving it and found the sporophyll bags right in the middle of the thickest part of the recovering forest. The area where we placed sporophyll bags 7 or 8 months ago has seen the fastest recovery and is the area with the highest canopy. This is only a correlation, and being scientists we cannot prove the causation. But in this case the correlation is very strong.
It felt like we were diving in a kelp forest yesterday! Thank you to all good diving volunteers who donate your free time to this project.
