New aussie diver

Hubby and I are off to get our OW certs next weekend. We have finished our manuals and the DVD's and now are ready to get started. I couldn't be more excited!! We are planning to head up to Cairns and Port Douglas for Christmas and a stop at Magnetic Island. Lots of diving to be done there!! We also were thinking of doing some dive trips next year and joining a dive club.

What do you think is the most important starter gear? fins, mask and snorkel? or maybe the wetsuit? We will buy our own gear but little bits at a time not a whole set up in one hit.

Will let you all know how it goes.....can't wait to learn more and have a look around this great site!!

Welcome to the board... Lots of great info & people here..
I'm new to diving too, but went ahead and bought everything.. At least the majority..
Basic personal gear from what I've read is as you've listed above and booties for the fins.. From what I've seen here, you can rent most everything else (including the above) from shops where you would get your tanks..

Yeah, good mask that fits your head, any tube snorkel as we don't use them after OW, fins & booties being your big purchase - followed by dive skin & suit. You can rent suits, but buy a bottle or pet pee spray, spay the insides and rise before wearing.

if you must buy gear, im a huge fan of mask, snorkel, fins and booties - reason being even if you arent diving you can snorkel anytime you want if you have the basics!

for local suppliers, im a huge fan of Chris at www.divetub.com.au hes the aussie Zeagle supplier and one of the rare ones in the industry, he really loves his products. email him for his best price as he will price match where possible and tell him almitywife gave you his details (no i dont get paid but its good to know your happy customers are spreading the word i guess)
