The Ultra is a decent backup computer, albeit pricey. It’s many other features have justified it’s cost.

It's not pricey if you factor in the "non-Ultra" Apple Watch comparison.

The equivalent "non-Ultra" Apple Watch with cell phone, stainless steel case & tougher sapphire display costs USD $749.

For $50 more, AWU adds a titanium case, larger/brighter display, dive computer & additional AWU-only features. So it depends on whether you value a non-diving Apple Watch. If you don't, AWU is pricey as a dive computer, and you probably shouldn't buy it.

If it appeals to you as a premium Apple Watch, the added price increment for dive functionality is actually very low.

Wonder what the next version of the Apple Watch Ultra will be like.
The rumours indicate a black or dark case

Actually, I guess there is a pretty good non-Apple-smartwatch reason the AWU is useful- it's a 100-meter waterproof cell phone that can automatically share GPS. Not a substitute for radios or satellite units, but AW has saved people- in this case calling in a helicopter, from 4 km off the Australian coast.

In the US (among other countries), cellular vendors must connect all 911 calls, regardless of whether the caller is a customer. You don't need reception from your own provider- it grabs whatever signal it can find.

If you're not too far offshore, you could also call or text your dive boat.
