AnemoneJane:
I'm also gonna invest in a hand-exerciser to build up some muscles in my left hand :sprite10: since I'm probably just a "finger weenie".

Get the putty that mountain climbers squeeze. Power Putty is a good brand and comes in "very soft" which it sounds like you will need. Putty does a lot better job on the whole hand vs. the spring squeezers.

Thanks, Android. Who carries this item? A specialized sporting goods store, or somewhere easier like WallyWorld? I'm anxious to start pumping putty, but I live in a small town without the sporting-goods superstores like Dick's.

I got mine at REI. You should also be able to order easily on the internet. Just Google for "Power Putty".

If you're quite dominantly right-handed, it could well just be a dexterity issue instead of a strength issue. Hand exercises and putty-squeezing should help, and working the buttons is a good idea too - not necessarily to loosen the buttons, but to loosen up your fingers and get 'em used to stretching. It's the same principle you'd use if you were learning to play the guitar - the more you practise the movements, the more natural and comfortable they are. You might consider holding up the inflator just the way you would while diving, and working the buttons while doing so. It might feel a bit silly, but hey! You are practising to become a scuba virtuoso!

I told him we'd better BOTH practice our OOA drills TOGETHER so I know I can depend on HIM to control ascent w/ his Air2 in his mouth. Practice, practice, practice! If he can't control it either, I want it out of his equipment setup, too. (call me a nag)

YAY for buddies practising OOA drills! Not enough people do this, and it's awesome that you're already taking steps to keep your skills sharp. With a little practise, he should be able to control his ascent with his Air2 pretty easily, so I wouldn't worry too much. Congratulations on becoming certifiable divers! Here's hoping both of you have many, many happy and safe dives together ^_^

[in the interest of full disclosure: I have an Air2 and I wuuuuuuv it to bits. Although I still have to use an octo when I'm working... sigh. Stupid awkward hoses!]
