Alright,

3 days until my checkout dives. It's funny, I've got myself all worked up over nothing. I've done all the stuff in the pool before with no problems and I was well instructed.

Anywho, I've been reading a lot and watching the threads, especially in the "New Divers and Those Considering Diving" forum and I've never read a post or any online article regarding anyone failing their OW cert. Am I right? Maybe you guys have witnessed some failures, but for $250, I'll make sure I get things right this weekend...

LOL open water jitters, as long as you focus on what you learned in the pool sessions and don't worry about the water, it is just like in the pool. . . You do what you have been taught and you will sail through it :D

Good luck :D

I've seen it several times. At least a few times a year people either drop out or the instructor won't pass someone. Not common but not unheard of.

It can happen. A friend of mine had trouble with the mask removal parts and that caused a bit of a panic attack. She was fine on her second try, though.

There was a guy in my original open water class that didnt pass..
He did fine on 3 of the checkout dives but when it came time for us to buddy up and swim back without the instructor he paniced and shot to the surface and didnt pass..

I have also heard it happen, though it is pretty rare, and usually for safety if they just can't get something down. A good instructor will work with individuals as they need (since not everybody learns at the same pace) until they can get the skills they are having problems with. What I hear most is not that they get failed, but they just come back and join a later class when they have had a chance to practice some of the skills offline.

It's not (or at least shouldn't be) a "sure thing" as in "I paid, so I get a C-Card".

OW checkout dives are supposed to show that you know and can perform the skills taught in the class, and let the instructor decide if he/she thinks you're ready to turn loose in Open Water.

It's entirely possible for a student to have not learned the necessary skills or not be proficient enough, however whether the student "fails" or is given additional pool time and/or classroom training depends on the policy of the shop or instructor you're using.

Failing may not be the correct term to use, unless you fail the written test several times.

You should have learned all your skills in the pool and should feel comfortable doing them before going to openwater.

Rather than "failing" ome may find diving isn't for them. Chances are if you were comfortable in the pool you should be fine in the open water.

I have had a couple of students whom I took back to the pool to improve their comfort level. All agreed to go back and all were very happy in the end that they did go back for additional pool work.

Being nervous about the dives is normal. Relax, focus and enjoy.

Which is why I said that I would get things right. I'm not wasting $250 just to do it all over again.
