I'm trying to figure out the maximum depth of Nelson ledges quarry. I've spoken to a couple of divers who say around 35', which seems logical. I'm attempting to dispel the myth that it is 100's of ft deep or even close to that depth. I've never personally dove there, it's a little to murky for my tastes.

I was there last weekend. We stopped at 27' because it was to dark and to cold to go deeper. I guess you can say we wimped out!!! Outside of the trenchs it seemed to be a constant 17' deep.

How was it? Is there anything worth seeing? That's pretty close to me (closer than Toledo) and I was wondering if it would be a worthwhile day trip.

Don't waste your time. Take the extra time and make the trek to Whitestar, Portage, or Gilboa.

A friend from Pittsburgh always does Whitestar or Gilboa. We did a trip to Nelson's Ledges once to cut down on the drive, but it was a total waste of dive time.

I'd second Bob's wisdom...

Last year I had to pick up some gear from a shop in Akron and then dragged my buddy up to Nelsons ledges because it was soo close. Though it was underwater, and though it was interesting to see the campers and "security" at nelsons I can't say that I'd ever do that again. If I lived a 1/2 hour away, ohhh I'm sure I'd use it, but otherwise an additional 1/2 hour or so of drive time would be more than well worth it for whitestar, gilboa etc.... But then I find myself driving 4hours to go dive in the first place so maybe my opinion on a little bit of extra drive time is skewed....

Did find some golf balls in nelsons, that has to be worth "something"...

I would have to agree with the above posts. If you are close, it's diving. I wouldn't dive a long distance to do it. I will say one good thing about it, we saw a lot of fish. There were fish everywhere around the one corner of a small island in the center of the lake. Oh, I did find 1 golf ball too :D

OK, I appreciate the feedback.

Diving Gilboa for the first time this weekend, can't wait!

I enjoyed Gilboa this weekend - though I admit to being a weenie and still preferring diving where it's warm, the facilities at Gilboa were the nicest I've seen yet. (My other quarry dives were at Portage and White Star during OW class).

The jet was great fun, and the fish population far exceeded my expectations. I did some general sightseeing and observed an AOW class. I also tried my new camera setup, a Canon A520.
