Here is the good, the bad and the ugly on my recent trip with Nekton.

The Good: The crew was great, Capt. Nelson was a good Capt. The DM's were average DM'S. The food was good, the rooms kept in good shape, the dive deck was well run. First time to dive with Steel 95's and I liked diving with those. Got my weight down to 4 lbs with a 3mm wet suit.

The Bad: While I can not blame some of this on the crew I can but a lot of the blame on Nekton it's self. We did not get to dive PR at all, due to the weather, that I understand. But also due to the weather we went over to St Croix USVI. The crossing took 14 hours due to 8-10 foot seas, high winds. Found out later in the week we also crossed over with only the starboard engine as the the port engine was out for the last three weeks. What would have happened if the starboard engine went out in the seas? Would have been ugly. I also noticed when we were getting on the boat, that no tanks were marked for Nitrox. Again at the end of the week, after over hearing several crew members that the Nitrox has been out for at least 4 months with no plans on fixing the Nitrox on the Roqual. Yet I was charged for Nitrox and I am now fighting to get a refund, this is going to be a long and hard fight. The reefs on St Croix are in really bad shape. Most of the hard coral is disimated, the soft coral in good shape, some really great sponges there. Marine life is little to none. Parrot fish is about the largest fish we saw. One shark was seen on the second day, and it was a small nurse shark. A few caribbean ray's seen, several turtles. I elected not to make some dives as the first dive there was very little to see other than some juvenile spanish hogheads, blennies and a few gobies. Most of the fish there was less than 2 inches long. I think Nekton needs to ditch this trip and find something better to take people on.

The Ugly: Men over the age of 50 that look like Chewbaca or Big Foot wearing speedos. American Airlines for sending our luggage to Bogata Columbia from Miami and not to Houston and for me having to speed all day at home waiting on my luggage to show up.

Wow, what a disappointing report on the USVI/PR itinerary! Hopefully you won't have any trouble getting the refund for the unused nitrox, when the compressor went down mid-week on our trip this summer, we were sent a check for 1/2 the price within 3 weeks of returning home.

If you have to fight to get your refund, I'd have to really wonder what happened to the great customer service and business practices Nekton has been known for in the past.

I find the lack of maintenance somewhat troubling.

Lets see what future posters say

Thanks for the report. I was considering this trip but now I may wait for more opinions. The Nitrox being down for four months seems a little odd.

Has there been a management change recently at Nekton?

from what I understand the compressor for nitrox went out and the new one is much larger and will not fit into the space they have and is doubtful it will ever be replaced. IMO Nitrox is must on a live aboard doing 5 dives a day. I am sure the Capt was just following company line, but with bad reefs, over fishing St Croix is not a great dive place.

Its inappropriate to charge for a service you know fully well you will not be providing. (Nitrox)

This is upsetting to me as we have trip planed on the 29th on the Pilot. I will be taking my two children that are both OW cert with about 20 dives. Their safety is first and foremost.

Todays weather in Belize looks like 6 to 7 foot seas.

I am doing SCR and so far Nekton has done a good job on getting O2 on board for the trip. I was told the Nitrox was only a max of 29%. Not so Nicetrox.

Their have been some recent posts about staff changes and other problems. I think the Pilot just came out of Coast Guard Inspections late September, so I hope this boat is in good shape.

I am a forensics investigator & forensics diver and conduct liability investigations after the fact. This includes marine investigations. I will have to keep my eyes open for problems.

The overall posts have been positive and what problems their have been seen to be Company related and not crew.

I forgot to ask, did you tip the required $200.00 PP.

Hope for the best and plan for the worst.

PS: I am one of the ugly ones. I have to wear a sign to not harpoon me while am in the water.

Hodge Podge, I just got off the Pilot in Belize yesterday. Had a great trip. Nitrox was a consistent 32%, seas were calm, reef was healthy, crew and guests were a pleasure to be with. I had zero problems and did not hear of any from anyone else.

I would be happy to answer any questions.

wow, sorry you had such a bad trip. I don't think you can blame the Nekton for crappy weather though. I was watching the weather map the first several weeks of the trips wondering how winter diving in VI would be and saw lots of rough weather including that tropical storm that hit PR. Nothing they could do about that but try to move the boat out of harm's way.

So they charged you for nitrox and you never got any? Nitrox out for 4 months? That seems odd. I can't see how you would have to fight for a refund. Engine out? Did they get it fixed during the trip?

As far as the reefs being beat up and no fish, I haven't heard that about St. Croix. Most trip reports I have seen (land-based) have said good things. I doubt they would have set up this itinerary if the diving there is bad. They put down their mooring pins after diving the sites from the Cachalot repeatedly to make sure the sites are worth diving. Maybe bad weather affected the fishlife? Just trying to figure this all out.
