I've never understood how someone knows they want to go tech, yet doesn't know what they want to do it for.

Or seems to have zero idea about the training, what it encompasses, and what they want to get out of it as well.

I knew that I needed to take my AOW I just didn't know for sure what comes after.

There is a poster on the wall of your local dive shop.

At the top is "open water diver".

Somewhere around the middle is "rescue diver".

Once you reach that point look around the store for gear with logos that say things like "OMS", "Halcyon" or "Diverite".

If you see them great.

If you don't, look for anther store.

Then start at the top of the new flowchart.

Repeat as necessary until you are broke.

This is why I was asking because I do not know what the training encompasses. I am wanting to further my diving but I would like to know what different branches offer. I have also stated what i would like to be doing and the reasons for the training i am asking about. I did not know whether the two different courses overlapped each other or what.

I didn't mean that I want to go dive doubles tomorrow or anything, I guess I understated my thoughts. When doing deeper dives on Al80 it seems that you run out of air before the NDL (which could be my breathing especially when spearfishing!) that is one reason for doubles and I assumed that learning to dive with them would benefit me as I continue my learning and diving. I knew that I needed to take my AOW I just didn't know for sure what comes after.
Sounds like larger steel tanks and nitrox would do everything you want to do...MUCH cheaper than the tech diving route, too!

Yea maybe the larger steels may help too, thanks UCF! I already have my nitrox and usually dive nitrox. Yea I also looked at GUE like another one posted and seems like that may be a good idea for the future.

You have goals (the mighty O), and I think that's good, provided you don't rush into things. From your posts, you don't seem to be. You're asking questions, which is the right move.

I have no objections to you learning to dive doubles at this point. It's not rocket science. But it does take self control because with a lot of gas it's easy to get yourself into a sticky situation (too much deco with too little air).

But my generic answer is: find people in your area who are doing the dives you eventually want to do, and ask them how they got there.
