Craisglist has a few cylinders for sale and Im tempted to pick them up.

Did luxfer make AL19 with the bad alum? if so these would be ones made pre 6/88? Would you pay $30 for one?

There are some Steel 72's for sale also. Was told PST brand but seller was not home to referance when I called them for info. He doesnt think there are liners in them? Are they worth $35? Recommendations. Was going to pick up 2 for playing around with backmount on the cheap.

thanks

My understanding is that Luxfer used the same alloy in all their tanks until some time in mid June 1988. I would get the 72s but it would depend on the LDS for the 19. Some shops will not fill them even if they pass all the tests, I pass by shops like that never to return.

I want to be sure these don't come with the liners? When I look inside what does the liner look like?

Look inside, you'll need some sort of a light on a stick or strand, and if you see plastic, it's lined, if you see steel, not lined. It's really that simple. I believe there were both white and dark brown plastic linings but someone else will know better than I. The tanks could be branded Dacor or something else, but if they're made by PST it will have those letters stamped after the original hydro. There might be a "C" in a circle in the original hydro stamp, that's Cochran Labs (I think) that was contracted by PST to do some hydro testing.

I've got two PST 72s doubled up, I really like them.

I wouldn't go out of my way to get an AL19. I have had an AL13 for a few years that I have used in the water exactly once. It is handy for working on regs, though.

On the steel 72's - make sure that the REE is stamped on the tank. If not you will almost certainly not be able to get the plus hydro. Without the plus rating you can only get them filled to 2250 psi instead of a full 2475 (+10%). That makes them essentially 65 cf tanks. Speaking from experience. Even having the original hydro a plus and looking up the REE myself didn't help.

So there should be a "REE" stamped on the tank?

Depends on who fills em. Mine have no plus. No trouble getting my usual 2500-2600 in em.

It depends on the brand, I have some 72's with no REE's such as USDivers and Norris tanks. There seems to be a large amount of old Norris tanks in the area. Best of luck getting a plus rating.

Never saw a 72 with the REE stamped on it. To me that is not a deal breaker. I agree with Jim, getting 2500 shouldn't be too much of a problem.

As far as I know there are no vintage LP72s that have the REE stamped on them. I've seen it on later Faber 3AA tanks, but that's it. I coudl be wrong, but I've never heard of it and there were only a few manufacturers.

There is a PST document floating around the net that has the REE for PST 3AA 2250 PSI tanks, and I suspect most hydro shops would accept it. Mine will get the plus rating at the next hydro. I rarely have a problem getting a 2475 PSI fill even though the current hydro does not have a plus. In fact, I've gotten a few 3K fills, gotta love those. If you can get to 2700, a very mild overfill, they're equal capacity as AL80s only lighter, smaller, and less buoyant. GREAT tanks!
