Can anyone help me... I leave soon for the mexican mayan riveira, all along the coast south of Cancun, and am wondering about bringing my speargun along and doing some spearfishing in the blue... anyone familiar with the regs, rules, etc... maybe the good places to go? maybe familiar with a dive shop that would help me out a bit..

Spearfishing was discussed on the boat when I was in PDC last week. Our DM said that though it was legal to spearfish with SCUBA, it is looked down upon so most dive ops don't allow it. This may have just been his view of the situation however. Who knows??

Don't know about spear fishing, but I used Dive Aventuras at the Omni Hotel in Puerto Aventuras before, and they were reasonably good dive shop. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

Where are you staying? Many of the nice resorts have affiliations with dive op's already and the hotel concierge might be able to give you an email address to write to. We were in Akumal in November, and visiting PDC for a day it seemed there were as many dive shops on "Fifth Ave" as there are taverns in Milwaukee!

I'm sure you can find email addresses off a Google search with which you can correspond for advice. I would guess that spearfishing might be frowned upon for safety reasons with the amount of divers that can populate the good sites. There might also be environmental restrictions in that area considering how e-conscious the Mexican authorities can be...

I was there just last year and was told that there was no spearfishing allowed. however this could have just been the dive operation that I went with.
