Dee, are you sure? It looks like a Dusky Damselfish to me.

I don't think so, Walter... I think it's a mature Beaugregory... and the one no one else has mentioned yet is a French Grunt. And the main character is a Blackbar Soldierfish. The Bigeye has a bigger eye.

Rick...there are several differences between the Blackbar and the Bigeye.

The Blackbar has a two-part dorsal fin; the Bigeye has a long rounded one.

The Blaskbar has a trianglar shaped anal fin; the Bigeye has a rounded one.

The BlackBar has a forked tail; the Bigeye has a flat tail.

The Blackbar has a longer body than the Bigeye.

The Blackbar has a shorter, more dome-shaped head; the Bigeye has a more pointed face.

The Blackbar has the 'black bar behind its gill plate; the Bigeye is a solid uniform reddish color.

The photo Stone linked shows three Blackbar Soldierfish.

So, it's a Blackbar Soldierfish, right? :)

No wonder I couldn't tell the difference between the Big Eye and the Blackbar.

Here's the link to the Search function on Fishbase.org . If you use this link, type in "soldier" in the Common Name search box. You will get a listing of a lot of "Soldierfish". Note that after you select a fish (Bigeye or Blackbar) you get the fish's description and a single picture of the fish. Click on the Picture of the fish to get the Gallery for that particular fish.

If Dee's descriptions are correct then all the pictures in the Big Eye gallery are Blackbars.

I went back to Paul Humann's Reef Fish ID book to double check my facts. He definately shows a difference in the two fish. If you have the book, for the Blackbar, look on page 219. And for the Bigeye, page 223.

All the pictures of both fish on the Fishbase site all show the same fish...which I believe to do be the Blackbar soldierfish.

Walter....what do you think?

Looks like Blackbar soldierfish to me.

The "Big Eye" on page 223 in Paul Humann's Reef Fish ID book is a different family from the "Soldierfish" family and is obviously not Sharpenu's fish.

The "Big Eye Soldierfish" and "Blackbar Soldierfish" have different species names on FishBase.org but they look like the same fish to me.

"Big Eye" is redundant when describing a "Soldierfish," so if it has a "blackbar", that's what I'm going to call it.

WHEW! Glad we got on the same page!
