I may have a few days next week to fly from Newark, N.J. to either Nassau or Freeport in the Bahamas.

Have never been there and was wondering if there are good diving locations at or near hotels in either either Nassau or Freeport. I won;t have time to go to any of the "out islands".

Can anyone recommend any nice & reasonably priced hotels too?

Thanks in advance,

Sy

I'm not sure about Freeport, but the only diving off Nassau is by boat. Either Stuart Cove's or Bahamas Divers are your only options. Cable Beach is nice - "reasonable" - I'll leave that up to you. http://www.cablebeachresorts.com/

The Holiday Inn downtown is reasonable but it seems to be a ride to everything else. I've not stayed there.

On Freeport, you could stay in the Lucaya area and dive with UNEXSO, they do the dolphin dives. Personally I wouldn't stay in Freeport, it's much more of a "port" than you'd expect - kind of grimy and industrial. Even the cruise passengers taxi over to the market/casino area.

I think I read a recent post where someone said there's no shorediving off Freeport either as the reef starts about a mile out. Would make sense since the beaches there are outstanding.

This might help: www.bahamasdiving.com

Yes both have diving nearby. I can recommend Stuart Coves in Nassau. Good op.

resonable-Nassau-Mignon Guest house-45$ a nite. Nice Greek couple run the place. Steve and Mary.

I just came back from Paradise Island....STAY off Paradise island it is a time warp nothing inexpensive about it.
I dove 3 days with my sons at Stuart Cove. My 17yr old did his referal dives there they are a great operation.

As for hotels, a couple that rode the bus with us stayed at Orange hill, they said it was clean and had a homey feeling, again this was not my personal experience

NOT true. Custom Aquatics in Coral Harbor (very near Stuart's) is a long-established and superb small dive shop.

I was diving in Port Lucaya a two months ago. Dove with Unexso and stayed next door at the Pelican Bay in Lucaya. Couldn't ask for a more convenient situation, they are right next door to each other. Dive staff at Unexso are great and the dolphin dive is a once in a lifetime experience. Pelican Bay is relatively inexpensive and the rooms are clean and they even through in a continental breakfast.

Like sjspeck said before, don't stay in Freeport. We went up there and it's pretty dead and nowhere close to the beach.

Hope this helps and happy diving.

According to their website - http://www.divecustomaquatics.com/ - they do only private boat charters.

Experience Nassau or Exuma diving with your own boat; you'll never go back! As we operate on charter only,
Not true?

I'm looking for alternatives to Stuart Cove's and Bahamas Diving so if you know of any others please post them. They're the only two listed on www.bahamasdiving.com.
