Guys, need to put up in sorong for a night before heading back to singapore. Been scouring the net and found pretty much NOTHING on hotels in Sorong, except bits of horror hotel rooms there! PLEASE! has anyone had any first hand experience there? NEED a GOOD RECOMMENDATION for a nights accomodation near the sorong airport!

Please!!!! anybody?? freaking out... managed to find 2 reports and they read like horror stories!

i think i was in waigo too. pretty basic but ok for one night. close to the harbor. in sorong nothing is far away from the airport. why not asking your tour op?

going up there with my local dive group and while we've managed to sort out our LOB, no one has a clue as to the hotels there. When searching online, mainly keep coming across Meriat Sahid Hotel sorong... and nothing else.... even then, no pictures or information about it....

after our liveaboard(the pindito) ran aground this past feburary, near misool(12 hours after the collision we were rescued by the indonesian coast guard); we arrived in sorong around 0800 and spent the next 5 hours freshening up and relaxing @ the meriat sahid prior to our hastily arranged flight to bali. the rooms are clean but dated(rustic), with hot water, air conditioning and not so comfortable beds(however, much improved over the bunks on the non-air conditioned coast guard cutter!!!). the breakfast buffet was actually quite good. there is a well stocked department store next door for any items you might need. a new hotel was being built directly across from the airport when i was there and it should be completed soon. the meriat, when we were in sorong, in feburary, was the finest hotel available. there were no other options,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Go onto "Lonely Planet" or some kind of travel site, surely there must be something, I don't think you will find a Hilton, Sheraton, or something on that scale, but as long as it's clean and safe and has a fan and bathroom, it's a place to sleep. I think "True Travelers" must sacrifice from time to time, that is what traveling is all about, going somewhere 'different'!

we went to the meriat for a drink. basically emptied the bar. well not quite but they ran out of tonic water after 2 cans - gin they still had.

meriat is pricy for what you get and also pretty much on the one end of sorong. for one night (jan. 20006) waigo was ok.

but question if your tour/lob op does not know, do they know where to go diving?

I stayed at the Mariat hotel last year after a two weeks' stay at beautiful Sorido Bay on Kri island. We requested a room change immediately after they showed us our room because it was stinking a lot - like mould - and the aircon was not working.

The new room was ok - also a bit worn down and stuffy but the aircon was working and it was quite clean.

I think there's not much choice in Sorong, it's really the end of the world over there...

hi all! thanks for the advice and feedback. Managed to negotiate with the LOB operator to let us stay on the vessel for the extra night.... PHEW!
