I am looking for a buddy to dive Sunday morning -- pretty much anywhere in Cape Ann, although I also would like to check out Chandler Hovey Lighthouse Park in Marblehead. If you are interested, please drop me a note.

I've read that there's a diving ban at Chandler Hovey on weekends and holidays from May to November. First of all, is this true and second of all can the town of Marblehead legally retrict diver access to a public beach like that? I know of the sign at OGB prohibiting nite diving, but it seems like it's not enforced or unenforceable. This whole right to beach access in MA has me confused...

the sign at OGB is put up by local yokels...good luck enforcing it...

According to Rick2, Chandler Hovey park has an old faded sign which prohibits skindiving on holidays and weekends. I suspect it's nothing but a liability issue -- if you skindive at the park and get hit by a boat, you can not sue the city.

Yeah, that's probably the answer. Skindiving..that's a hoot.

Restricted area?, my understanding is that if you can swim it you can dive it.

Back to the question at hand, I'm not 100% sure I can yet, but I would like to get out Sunday as well. PM me if your still looking for a dive buddy.

Well, I went with Johnnyseko and a friend of his (not SB member). In short... the place sucks. Boat traffic forces you to stay at 10'-15' depth, and even without waves (sea was like glass) the current at that depth creates maybe 3' vis. Add the thick carpet of seaweed, and it does not make for an enjoyable dive. I doubt I will go there again. Well, maybe at high tide. (We got into water almost exactly at the lowest tide, which I am sure did not help.)

Yeah, that about sums it up for me. I had a bad feeling waiting on the surface looking down and not being able to see my fins. Hoping it might be better at depth. Well, it wasnt. So my dive there lasted 10min. The whole time I was thinking I was just wasting air. Couldnt see a damn thing. And trying to keep track of each other just made the dive more difficult. This is one place you do not want to ascend without a dive flag nearby. It is a bit busy boat wise.
Still being early I figured if I stripped out of my gear quick I could drive up to cape ann and still have time for 2 dives. Worked out rather well besides the traffic to get there was unbelievable. I've never actually driven there so late (11am). So my buddy and I ended up at Pebble beach. Vis there was @15'. I was surprised there were actually some decent sized bugs hiding around.
