put a split ring on the camera and attach it to a retractor on your BCD. you only pull it out if you see something worthy of taking a picture of. it works great if you only use the internal flash for underwater pictures like me.

for some reason, attaching pictures is blocked from my current location by ISP (east side grand cayman) so use the link below for pic. i am currently running a XZ-1/PT-050 camera setup.

Yes, this basic idea has worked well for years, with many different kinds of cameras.
Beware the split ring, however; a softer link may be advisable. Inadvertently twisting the split ring can break the attachment point on the camera.

for many years i did the same thing using zip ties. at first i used one zip tie, but on a dive in the caymans i saw my camera floating away so i went to two zip ties for redundancy. then i went to a split ring. the split ring works better IMO as the retractor rotates and therfore is not a hard connection.
