Mer and Rob, wanna go diving Sunday? We'll show him how it's done ;)
I'm unfortunately not available on Sunday. I might be around the Cape on Fri nite/Sat to chat about gear.

I hesitate to say this on-forum, but if you're looking for philosophy compliant gear (esp BP/wings) -- Halcyon is the only way to go without having to jump through hoops. Halcyon stuff ain't the cheapest, but once you add up your time to say "fix" an OMS wing with the right corregated hose length, it's alot more time and aggrevation. <grabs a bucket of water to put out flames>

As for dive shops that support "DIR" -- I don't think there are any in MA. Here are the Halcyon dealers: http://halcyon.net/dealers/ma.shtml But to my knowledge, none of them are advocating DIR. Scuba Shack in CT has several instructors who dive and teach the philosophy from pool dive 1 and they rent Halcyon BP/wings.

Seriously, see if Bob Sherwood has any room in his classes this season, or at least get into one of Ed Hayes's buoyancy classes (CT). I think these classes would be a good resource to help you with your gear choices.

Oxycheq's stuff appears to me to be DIR out of the box, FWIW.

Well just ask Vadim and my buddy Adam from fundies #2 about those Oxycheq's they are selling.

Hm.. I don't remember MHK having any problems with the Oxy stuff in Vadim's first fundies.. and they looked OK to me. What's the issue with it?

I don't have any first hand experience with them, but from what I understand, not the right shape.

One does need GUE Or Halcyon to dive with a BP&W and dive with a hogarthian rig. I have owned an Oxycheq wing for just over a year, and have no issues...
I have actually heard comments that some people PREFERRED the Oxycheq wing over the Halcyon, and some had dramatic improvements in their trim when diving the Oxycheq wing...

Take everything you hear with a grain of salt. Even what I said. Try before you buy, thats my motto...

Well if it makes any difference I am really not trying to truly be DIR. I like the simplicity of it all and at least at this point the whole philosophy part of it is not the main focus. From my standpoint since I am starting fresh I see no reason not to follow the setup as much as I can.

As far as trying before I buy that seems near impossible.

I have to say that for a person trying to buy there first set of gear this is really tough...perhaps that is somewhat by design...i really dunno. I fully intend to take the course in PA but again i wanna do it with my own setup. Which puts me back to the chicken egg thing. I thought I was being smart by taking the DIR approach but it not terribly easy. For me it will be mostly recreational diving but may lead to more s I progress.

What I would like is a full setup at a good value. It is not that I am lazy only a bit daunted and while I dont mind paying for quality i dont need to fit this system to the letter or counted among a specific set of divers.

Basically I want to make the smartest purchase possible as a first set. I would like to minimize if not eliminate repurchase of gear. Augmentation is fine but buying the wrong thing makes this expensive hobby even more so...heheh but I am now preaching to the choir :-) So if any of you folks wanna sell your loving used setup gimme a yell.

Well, I can let you use my Oxycheq wing, and BP if you want to try it out. Unfortunately, BP&W's are stocked by few, if any, dive shops in the Boston area. When I was working for one out there, we had em. Now, I dont know...
