Just in case anybody from the Socal area happens to up in this neck of the woods and would like to check out what Northern California diving is all about, I would like to announce the North Coast Divers July Dive:
Place: Fisk Mill Cove South, Sonoma County (about 4 miles north of Salt Point State Park)
Date: Sunday, July 2nd
Time: 9:00 AM
Activity: Scuba and freediving (Note: Ab diving is off season in July)
Dive site description:
Fisk Mill Cove South is an intermediate to advanced dive site depending on conditions. The cove is about a quarter mile hike down an improved trail from the parking lot with a fairly tricky climb down a rocky slope to the water. There is a calm cove to enter the water and a sometimes challenging surface swim out to the diving area. This site is all rock and features some of the best underwater structure accessible as a beach dive on the Sonoma Coast. There are tons of fish for the avid hunter including big lings, reds, blues and others, and swim throughs, walls, hallways, and lots of growth and criters including puget sound crabs, giant pacific octopus, a variety of filter feeding organisms, and nudibranchs for the sightseer and photographer. If conditions present a challenge then I do not recommend trying to get sensitive camera equipment through the entry/exit zone because it could get banged up pretty good. The depth range is 35 to 70 feet depending how far out you go.
To get there:
Head north on hwy 1 from Jenner and go about 25 miles to Fisk Mill Cove. The entrance is well marked and once turning left into the main entrance make another left at the T and follow the road to the parking lot. There are restroom facilities and a great picnic area with barbecues and great pine and fir trees with ferns and shade and green grassy meadows. We will be having a picnic with award winning tri tip (just like Trish makes on the Peace dive boat, she taught me her secret), micro brew, and some assorted cold salads.
Not many people know about this place as a scuba diving spot so chances are we will have it all to ourselves.
Hope to see some southerners there, maybe. The offer's always open.
