I am doing my navigation checkout dive this month at Lake Rawlings. I am so nervous about it. I just about get lost in my own back yard. I am dyslexic and directions are so hard for me. I am open to help hints and lots of "You can do it girl!"

You probably know this one, but if not: Just take the same compass you will use for the dive and get very familiar with it in your back yard. Practice walking off distances and taking headings.

I used a compass mounted to a slate for my check out dive. It helped to draw and write headings right there next to the compass. . .

Good luck. You can do it!

Don't call it getting lost. Just consider it "slightly bewildered as to where I am".
Just remember to keep the arrow pointing at the right spot and it will fall right into place. Besides, Rawlings isn't that big. We'll find you if you get to bewildered. :10:

hey, gal, send a pm to jason b. he's good at navigating, and very good at explaining how he does it. plus, he's very familiar with rawlings & has maps, which will give you the big edge! mwah hah hah!

Just do everything opposite of what you think you should... that oughta cover it...YOU CAN DO IT SWEETIE... Hip Hip Hooray! ... and oh... if you take a magnet with you and hold it near the Instructors compass without him seeing... you can have some real fun!

Forget about being nervous. Yes I know easier said than done, you want to do well and that's a admirable. Seriously you always know how to get to the surface so there's nothing to be nervous about.

Like others said;
Practice topside
I assume you are doing this as an AOW elective or as a specialty, do diving and practice.
Have a slate to keep track of headings.

I'm a rookie who hopes to hit the 30 dive mark this weekend but after trying and trustng the compass once and having it get us back to the correct beach an hour latter the rest fell into place.

Thanks to you all for the support. The 26th is the big day. I'm gonna practice all this week. My instructor says I will go out and do 2 triangles, and he gives 5 feet leeway. Thanks for the encouragement.

Bring a small slate with you. I used one in my nav class to write down the headings and do the quick math. My last bit of advice, trust the compass! Sometimes people ignore the compass and go in instinct and get lost. The compass is always right (Unless you are around a lot of big metal objects like a shipwreck).

When we did our Nav, we messed up bad the first time (my buddy & I)\I think the key is COMMUNICATE! Talk abouit who is going to do what , and like other said, practice TopSide!

I honestly thought I was the worlds worst with a compass! But my instructor said I was actually one of the best he has seen. I think out perception of ourselves is a great deal more critical then the truth....anyhow...

YOU CAN DO IT GIRL! I have every faith in you! Let us know how it goes!
