This one's a bit strange. I have a friend of mine who took all his certification and check out dives through a group in San Diego. The group came on base (US Navy) and conducted all the training. My friend does not recall ever providing a picture for his card and within a week after wrapping up to certification was issued orders and went on a Cruise. So if a card was ever sent, it went to base housing that was vacated.

Now, I am PADI certified and my LDS told me about the hand fulls of files from people who take the course but never supply the photo. Is this the same for NAUI? Is it possible that my friend's file is in the hands of a dive shop in Sand Dog?

I sent the link to NAUI's site where he should be able to back check his certification. No Joy, If he did everything right, NAUI's never heard of him.

He took the certification in '99 and I want to get him active and diving as I trust him and know he will make a good dive buddy. He could just take the PADI truncated course, but I want to exhaust efforts that do not "Put Another Dollar In" first.

There in lies the rub... he took the course back in '99 and does not remember the name of the shop or instructor. I was hoping there may be some squids on here who got trained by the same outfit and recalled the name, or maybe some instructors might read this and have some ideas.

He will need to send an inquiry for lost card to NAUI. In 1999 the online registration system was not up and all cards were not put into the database. As stated earlier pictures were not needed for NAUI cards then. Have him send in a enquiry with as much info as he can about the class and NAUI will search the older certs and see if it was processed.

I did SDI this summer and that doesn't have my picture, and my DM card from last fall doesn't have it either. One of my buddies was OW certified last fall and this spring and neither have pics, nor do the Rescue cards... Guess it's still optional

Just have you friend go onto NAUI's website and follow the directions for lost card replacement. Pictures were not required at the time of his course. You have the option of pictures now.

If he was trained by a dive shop on a Navy base it was most likely IB Divers in Imperial Beach. They hold the MWR contract for dive courses on base. The head instructor back then was Ralph. He passed away a few years ago and his wife still owns the shop. They may have a record of him at the shop depending upon how far back their records go. Give them a call at 619-424-6547

Outstanding, thank you very much!

Just wanted to say case closed, the dive shop that sardiverdan noted was right on the money. Fantastic, they found my friends file and now we get to hit the water next weekend. Thanks!
