I was recently diving with my wife at a depth of 80 foot. We decended fairly rapidly though. We were over sandy bottom and she freaked out! First she pointed into the sand and tried to tell me there was an octopus there??? Then she was doing all kinds of wierd stuff and looked stoned! I asked her to write me a note and she handed back the slate with three scribbled lines and not one discernable letter and acted upset that I couldn't read it! I grabbed her by the hand and we ascended, she returned to normal at 50 feet or so.

I think I have been narced around 90 foot. I remember looking at my pressure gauge and having to talk myself into the fact that I really was getting low on air and it was time to return. Luckily... so far I seem to get a very peaceful feeling when I'm deep (whick for me is only 90-100 foot and no deeper)- just so I can always talk myself into knowing it's time to go. Maybe I should spring for that nitrox class after all.

Tony.

Curt Bowen:
Narcosis, the evil man of the deep.

Good analogy, it is that evil guy that gives you the spooks.

Curt Bowen:
I can tell visual problems around 250-280 and a tunnel affect around 310 feet.

But Marie,

Did you say what the depth was of this wreck and if you were diving air or nitrox or mix? I have a friend that gets narc'd at the drop of a hat, even on nitrox.

I was at @ 106 feet. I was breathing straight air. Second dive of the day. First dive was to 95 feet. Very very cold, around low 40's. There was over an hour between dives as well. I was a little anxious because this was my deepest dive to date so that could have had a factor in it. I will do it again but will watch my symptoms. Matt is aware of my symptoms as well. Incomplete hand signals and the such. I thought I had signaled that I was cold and he said it looked like I had kicked a field goal.

I remember the first time I was narc'd (the only time I think I was and knew it) I was diving the duane down in the keys, I forget the depth, at least 100' and I was diving air. The current was ripping and when I made it to the center of the ship where I was protected from the current I see a baracuda with a fish hook in his lip, and I thought, poor thing, how can i get that out of his mouth, and I began swimming towards him thinking I'd free him of this hook in his lip, luckily the narcosis subsided before I reached out to him and I thought, wait, what am I doing?

Marie have you down AOW or notrox yet? In my class we tested how narcosis affected us by doing a puzzle or combination lock on the boat, timed it and then did the same puzzle or lock on the bottom and timed it again to see what the time difference between the two were. The only one in my AOW class that was narc'd ended up being the instructor.

I currently always dive 32% on all my dives now.

Yep, I did my AOW about a month ago. Now I am trying to decide what to take next, rescue diver or nitrox.
