Hi, I'm going to be in the Outer Banks in August of this year (2004) and I'm looking for dive operators in the Nags Head area. I'll probably dive a day or 2 with Capt. John out of Hatteras (Dixie Arrow or Proteus maybe), but since I'm going to be staying in Corolla, that'll be a heck of a hike to do more than once or twice (well, on vacation anyway).

Any nearby recommendations to get me out to the U-85 or Benson?

Thanks,
-Frank

hears some info
Diving Depths: 90-100 ft.
Visibility: I suspect usually less than 30 ft.
Current: n/a

Summer Temperature: warm at the surface; hi 50s on the bottom
Points of Interest:Hey! It's a U-Boat! What more needs to be said?
Fish/Animal Life: More of the fish species which frequent the colder water climates of NC
Description: boat called the Crystal Dawn. I felt sorry for the divemaster. It took a couple of hours for everyone to have their assigned "dive window" on the wreck. Third, there was bad viz (less than 10 ft) and it was cold! We were used to the warm Gulf Stream waters south of Hatteras Inlet. Little did we know what awaited us down on the wreck. The temp dropped 25 to 30 degrees! Our heads ached--no hoods!--and those in shorties had our legs turn blue! Needless to say, I don't remember much about the wreck, except that it appeared to be less intact than the U-352. I would like to go back, this time with a camera....and more neoprene!
me i would dive the U 352 first .

Thanks for the replies. Mike, I spoke with Sid at OBX Diving and it seems like a good place. We'll probably do the U-85 and then the Jackson or the Advance up there and do the Dixie Arrow out of Hatteras.

Medic, I've seen the BDFC website too and I'm not sure what time of year that was written up. 36 to 42 degree water is normal up here, so that's not a problem. I was planning on diving dry just so that I could use my 'big-tanks' instead of my aluminum 80 doubles :P - so I'll have to check with Sid to see what the conditions will be like in August.
