Mel. Mine makes that horrible noise if I forget to take the lens cap off when I turn it on.
What I would do: (and I really mean for myself - do this completely at your own risk!!!!!)

I would hold the camera case firmly and with my other hand try to twist and wiggle the lens barrel a bit. I don't mean try to push it back in!!!!
What I'm thinking (guessing!!!) is that this might be that the gearing mechanism of the barrel isn't engaged correctly and is therefore jamming. When the barrel can't move properly you get that horrible noise before it does the safety shutoff. I would be hoping that by manually wiggling the barrel I might be able to get it to re-seat itself correctly.

Like I said - you do this at your own risk. It might work.......it might break the camera completely.

Hey Kim,

I'll give that a try if leaving the batteries out for 24hrs doesn't do the trick. It can't really get much worse than it already is!

My absolute last thing to do would be to turn it on and do the above while it was making that noise!!

p.s. good luck!!!! :cyclops: (don't you just love these new Jaffa men!!! LOL)

Mel.B:
...the camera was turning on and then turning off. I couldn't hear the beeping noise it is making.
Mel,

From what you've said I would definitely not be throwing the camera on the scrap heap just yet. There's some good advice in the previous posts.

If you have whirring and lights, it sounds like your camera is trying to come back to you. If it's turning on and then off again right away could mean bad batteries or a bad connection early in the power circuit. Either way, that's good news because the problem could be fairly straightforward - try again with known good batteries, and if that doesn't work get a second (and/or third) reputable shop to give you a quote.

Some more good news is that if it hasn't flooded, then your standard warranty may still be valid. Is it still covered?

I had a canon G1 that I thought was dead, found out it was an oxidized contact on the battery terminals. Clean terminals with a light sandpaper both at the battery and inside the camera’s battery housing. Then wipe clean with some alcohol. I have the same problem with the cordless telephone not charging up due to a bad contact. Good Luck

Olympus gives a 6 month warranty on repairs according to their website.

Good luck either way!

Kim,

I think I got an extra 6 months....but it was so long ago, things might have changed.

Oly does give a 6 month warrenty on repairs. Not only that they reemburse you for your shipping the second time. I would try the self repair link for fixing the dial shaft on 5050s and 5060s. If that dosen't work, send to to Oly and get a new 7070 for under $400!

I've tried all the tricks above and still no luck :116: Fortunately I discovered today that it looks like my house contents insurance will cover it, which will be cheaper than sending it to the service centre here in Oz or replacing it myself. Hopefully it will turn out ok.

Mel

That sounds OK. As they don't make the 5050 anymore I suppose you'll have to get the 7070 with the insurance.......poor you!

Hey Kim,

A 7070 would be nice, but I'd actually prefer it if they repaired mine so i don't have to fork out for another housing. We'll see what happens.
