Well I took the plunge several weeks ago and bought a Fred T Heavy SS Backplate...built a harness and put a Dive Rite wing on it.
My rating: 9.5 of 10 (not that my rating really means anything)
What a purchase, I couldn't have done better with any of the big name brands.. The Plate weight is just over 9 lbs and with the Fred T Heavy STA that I just put on the entire set up weighs about 16 lbs (20 with the wing). I got the plates finished, I know that I would have put off doing the finishing myself. The plate looks wonderful no sharpe or ruff edges anywhere on it.
It is really nice to have a BC that fits snug and doesn't move around or shift. Long story short I LOVE IT!
For anyone looking to get a backplate - checkout Fred T's before you spend a lot of extra money on name brands.
