I understand using the camera to light meter the water, I just dont know how to read the E-330 and make the proper adjustment. Thank you for the help with this.

I have been shooting with this camera all trial and error. I have not used it since thanksgiving. Recently Marty Snyderman was here in Phoenix and he gave an u/w photo class and I attended it. I now have a much better understanding of what I should be doing. I did not know to light meter the water prior attending Marty's class. I am now ready to try my new knowledge, but will not be able to for a while. Thinking Cozumel or Cayman's sometime in February.

It sucks having one camera for underwater and knowing my back up will not do the job, if it is needed. The camera wont stay focused u/w but topside it does.

Gus:

Have you confirmed both cameras are set the same in terms of the autofocus functions? (Tool 1 menu). You might have one set differently than the other...?

I'm also looking for a backup E330, but I guess I oughtta buy the housing first before I worry about floods therein. ;-)

Both cameras were set to the same setting and the same lens on both cameras. 14-54mm lens is the only lens I have for u/w. I double checked setting and changed the metering.

The first camera I bought from ebay was a demo never owned by anyone, the description said. I received the camera in a box that said refurbished. I should have done more research on what demo means before I bid on it. Long story short I got the camera and it worked. I used the camera a little bit, them I got the 14-54mm lens. With this lens I started shooting alot trying to learn to use the camers. Top side no u/w. One day I was trying to take some photos of my reef tank and the camera was having problems focusing. I started trying to take pictures in different rooms of my house in low light. Low light seemed to be the problem. My reef tank is in a room with low light, but the tank is lite with metal halides. I contacted the company I purchased it from and they said send it back. I first took the camera to a camera repair shop in Chandler AZ, they confirmed the camera had a focus problem. I then sent the camera to NY. I was then told it would be 6 to 8 weeks before I got it back. The only problem was I was going diving in three weeks. I then purchased a new camera from B&H Photo. This camera had no problems in the low light when focusing. I used the new camera on my three week diving trip with 14-54mm lens. After returning home from this trip I received the ebay camera and I went to Mexico with both cameras. This is when I discovered the ebay one had problems using the same settings as the B&H camera. The ebay one would focus and hold focus in the modes setting u/w wide and macro. I dont understand it.

This is to long.

Thanks everyone

Check the firmware versions on the cameras. If you haven't downloaded the latest release (version 1.2), do so with the Camedia software that came with your camera. A long shot.

Yeah, the low-light focus performance of the E330 isn't stellar to begin with, at least on my sample-of-one, shooting in air. I was pretty much assuming I'd need a focus light for UW use, either as part of a strobe like the DS125 or separately (I kind of prefer the separate idea to make the focus light aiming independent of strobe aiming for backscatter concerns, although jlyle sure posts some wonderful results with dual 125s).

Strange to hear the difference between two units. Hope you get it cleared up one way or another...sounds like the only possible fix at this point (besides trying the firmware upgrade for the camera as jlyle suggested using the Olympus Master software) is to send directly to Olympus for review and potential repair, if the original 'shop' is claiming it's fine.

If the problem is in low light situations then it might be a good idea to send it to Olympus explaining the specific circumstances that happens in.I would also send the lens with it even though you use the same lens on both cameras and only have a problem with one camera. It might be that the lens is not seating properly on one of the cameras which might be a camera problem.A long shot but you never know.

Thanks to all fellow E-330 owners for your great and helpful input! Just to make sure, when people talk about "EV" we are talking about exposure compensation, right?

Both cameras have the same firmware.
The camera has been sent to olympus and checks out ok.
I will keep using the better camera for underwater, and the other seems to work for topside.

Thanks to everyone for their help with my ebay camera. I am just glad I have one camera that work well U/W.

I use a focus light pelican 2410 recoil LED. I thank the light works well but I am still a novice.

Back to being able to light meter the water with the E-330, you will need to set the camera in manual press shutter button half down look in view finder and the lower right number is what the camera meter says the exposure value would be for the shot. Someone corect me if I am wrong on this.

Correct. It's the number in the upper right of the LCD when using liveview.
