I have a problem equalizing and always its my left ear. I equalize on the boat and alot going down, is there anyone that has this also? Thanks.

With me it's my right ear. I find that if I equalize on airplanes, on hilly car trips, etc., it makes it a lot easier when it actually comes to diving. I seem to remember reading something somewhere about "toughening up" one's eustachian tubes...

I have the same problem Aquasport. I've just recently received my OW certs and have only had pool and checkout dives to relate too.....I have not really been DIVING....yet. I've had a slight problem with my left ear from the beginning with the problem being it was a little slower than the right, however, NEVER any pain. I have noticed equalizing is lots easier now than when I began. I've only been down to a little over 40' but had not problems. I just equalize early and often!!!

Okay, I am not a medical professional of any kind, but as it's Friday, and one of our phsycian volunteers may not have time to deal with this until later, let me suggest this popular advice:

You have a medical problem, so you need to see a physician first, in case you need medical help, preferable an ENT, even better - an ENT with dive experience or training. You call DAN, free phone number on your card*, for referrals in your area, and hope that your insurance company will approve them.

It could be E-tube problems, or nasal cavaty problems, or wax, or allergies, etc. See what the doc says first.

* If you don't have a DAN card, we need to talk about that, too.

Good luck...

Getting checked by a Dr. (preferably a diving ENT) can be very helpful as they can rule out physical problems or sometimes if there is a problem there may be an easy fix.

Yes, me too. Its gotten better through the years but I know many folks who can dive head first straight down. I can't but I've learned techniques to overcome my weaknesses, and if I have to, I can descend very quickly but feet first.

I can get down fast if using a FFM or helmet but in normal scuba mask and reg I have to take my time for the first 10-20'.

There are people out there who blast down with a scooter. Not me!
