Carolina Diver:
None taken, but if that's the case they should probably say that they don't like to instruct on that type of equipment, not that "they don't know how". Just comes across as not being forthcoming.

The real truth is probably both the BC and the fact it came from Leisure Pro. They really have a thing about Leisure Pro. Most of the instructors are also technical divers. I'm sure they know how. They just don't want to do it.

why should he have to pay for a service that has already been done....You're right, it's their call on the boat and pool, they should tell you that on the front end...they knew I already had my equipment, and trust me, tantrum's aren't part of my nature but speaking my mind is, if you don't like what I write, don't read it...

Have you ever gone down to the Caribbean and been asked to pay to certify your equipment before you get on their boat? I havent.

Mark Vlahos:
As far as the boat trip, was this a trip where you paid for a spot on the boat, or was it some free trip, also did they OWN the boat or were they simply purchasing spots on a commercial dive boat? Same thing, if they own it they make the rules, if they are just buying spots for you then they should not care about your gear.

Mark Vlahos

They own a big house boat (converted to a comfy dive boat) that they keep at Heber Springs, AR and if you join the Dive Club, you can dive any weekend, weather permitting. It's a man-made lake and the diving is not too bad - for a lake. But we are land-locked here.

They have to check your equipment before you take the class and they charge for it. I don't think it has anything to do with the boat.

Even if they own the boat... Why would you only let people on that bought gear from you?? Or you make them certify their gear?

Sounds like the wrong mentality to me..

If they are running a trip, they should be selling seats, shouldn't matter where you bought your gear. I have not once been asked to certify my gear before booking a trip on a boat... and if this was required, I would not book with that outfit.

Paying to have the gear assembled (if purchased elsewhere) sounds acceptable. The shop that treats me the same no matter where I buy my gear is the one I go back to..

I bought a BP/W for my wife (LDS) and another for myself (internet).. Received the same levels of service from the people there.. they even commended me on the price I purchased mine at.. Not a negative thing was said... A definite class act. (not the shop being discussed in this thread, just using as an example)

I can't complain about The Dive Shop. They (Randy, Lisa, and Morgan especially) have always gone way out of their way to help my wife and I. I never felt like I had prodcuts "pushed" on me. I have been in that shop alot. We took the class room part of OW last Nov, but because of my schedule (I'm a medical student), we weren't able to go do our OW dives until a few weekends ago. I was in the shop playing in the pool almost every weekend. As long as I am in Memphis, I plan on giving them my business. As far as the equipment inspections before you can use the gear in their pool, it is an insurance thing. Something about the shop's liability insurance in case you get hurt. The inspections are not something they just made up, it's SSI's normal yearly equipment inspections and service (which you should have done anyway). I'm sure there is alot of info on their website. BTW, I didn't purchase either mine or my wife's BCs there, and never have had any trouble. I even got mine from the internet (sort of).

Edit: And you talk about the dumbed down PADI AOW... you should look at multiple instructors. I promise you there are some out there that it is not dumbed down. It has to do with the instructor, not the agency.

Look, I never said anything about your instructor. I'm well beyond AOW at this point and when I took it I had almost 100 dives and the material was not that challenging. I'm sure you instructor was very good. As was my SSI OW instruction.

Peace.

There was no argument in paying them to assemble the regs, fully expected to, I am a Wild Blue member but was told post joining that I wouldn't be able to participate until I have my equipment certified by them. That's ok too...I just won't participate, get my 10 fills and call it even. I don't need a pool, I live on a 75,000 acre lake and have my own 5 acre lake.....the pool use was part of the club membership package for me and part of my friend's class. My main point is they have created more anxiety to learning than there already was. He is afraid he will not be treated right at their facility during training. And, if he likes the Morphus and that's what he bought and intends to use, that's what he wants to train on....Just like some like jackets others like wings...The instructors are knowledgeable and that's why I initially took him there. RHM, Morgan told me they don't appreciate anyone buying from the internet. He and I have both bought equipment from them also...just not everything we have.

Don is certified. I may have missunderstood, but it appears he was not going to be in training. He still couldnt get on the boat without it being checked out (If I read right).

Sounds no different than me taking my gear on a boat. I take great care of it. I would almost be offended if someone required me to pay to have them 'certify' my gear before I got on a boat.
