Don Wray:
Anyway, off the saop box now...good diving to all. RHM, would tell you I'd see you June 11th but doubt I'll be welcome after some folks read this post. Best!

What's going on June 11th? I don't do any trips with any LDS because when I'm diving, I don't want to be babysat. I have to go down there today to drop off a 7 foot hose for the Apeks and to discuss my Deco class so I'll find out what they think. Randy is at Memphis in May (I think he is barbequing), but Lisa will be there.

I would be happy to dive with you sometime...but I'm not diving Sardis Lake.

Don WrayHe:
ask about just the class price and it was $599...others in the area I have found out since charge $350 for instruction all inclusive....you either use their equipment or your own.

They are more expensive than the other shops in town, and there is not really much competition compared to places like Florida. But my buddy took the class with Dowdle Sports (about $350) and got 3 sessions before open water checkouts. He also had to drive to the Germantown Community Center to do his pool sessions.

I want to do Bonne Terre and Mermet....maybe you, hubby, Larry and I can make a trip sometime...I'm off to Daytona Tuesday for my Advanced, then going to Fort Lauderdale for some reef diving and take some photos in June...yours were excellent...enjoyed them alot. I wouldn't recommend a speedy course to him, I want him to learn, not just get a card...the other place is at the old Wimbleton sports plex on Shelby Oaks and is an intensive course.

A lot of Memphis folks go to Cozumel as it is pretty cheap from here. I never had a camera class and I bought my cameras wholesale because I have a reseller license for computer equipment. :) I'd like to go someplace exotic and take a seminar sometime.

*Floater*:
What do you mean assemble or certify your regs? What is there to assemble?

I'm just curious because I'm a vacation diver, and no one has ever asked me to let them "assemble" my regs. No shop has ever demanded I pay them to certify my regs either. What's involved?

I'd demand to see their certification to certify before they laid a finger on my gear. And, as everyone else has suggested, I would RUN not walk to a new LDS.

I dove Cozumel in my open water and loved it....Playa Del Carma as well....so sounds great...I'm retired so time off is not a problem...Fat Tuesdays is pretty good too

Depends on your definition of cheap. As a college kid, its way too much for me to go back to Cozumel. Went there a few years ago and got two amazing dives in though. Id recommend it to anyone. However, I hear if you go this summer, there is a new regulation that requires you to fund a broke college diver's trip with you.

See, I'm a fairly pragmatic guy. I figure a business owner is free to run it any way he wants.

Now, if that way is such that he makes it clear that he doesn't want my business, I will gladly ensure that happens. He can have fond memories of not getting any.

On the other hand, if he runs it in ways that I appreciate & treats me right, he's likely to end up with a lot of my trade. My LDS falls into this category. They treat their customers right, don't play childish games with them & provide outstanding service. They know the internet exists & have accepted that they have to compete with it, like it or not. They do everything they can on prices & on some lines are actually cheaper than what I can find on the net.

The notion that a shop would punish a customer for buying from LP is utterly foreign to them. They obviously want to make the sale themselves but know that they aren't going to make every sale. If a reg is brought in that isn't under warranty, they gladly service it -for the same fee as any other reg- and the customer just has to pay for parts. And they don't play games with the parts charges, either. Joe Diver with a Scubapro reg from LP will pay the same for parts that I do for an old reg that I didn't keep serviced annually. I bought it new, but since I didn't meet the terms, it no longer gets free parts, so I pay. Or for one that I bought used, they don't care.

As a result, I gladly buy the majority of my gear from them & they get all of my service work.

Ok. Here's the deal after talking to them about this. Their pool insurance policy requires that all gear be checked out by them. However, you don't have to get your gear inspected. There are 10 or so Seaquest BCs and Aqualung regs in the pool room for use by customers and students. If you don't want to get your gear inspected, then use one of their rigs in the pool. It is as simple as that.

I really didn't get into Don's problem with them, but they are aware of it and concerned. Morgan indicated that she tried to accomodate him. That's not really any of my business so I didn't pry.

I'm just relating their side of it here, so don't shoot the messenger!

Thanks Red. Nice to have facts instead of just speculation.
