I already told ya'll about my LDS refusing to let me participate in their pool or on their boat with out paying them to "certify" my BCD and regulators...all of which were bought new in April from Joe America diver in florida....well, I had talked a friend of mine into taking lessons from them before all this started. He bought a new Mares Morphous Pro Airtrim BCD, Dacor Viper America reg and octo, Dacor Supreme gauges. He had to buy his wetsuit, mask, snorkel and fins as part of their instruction package; $800....he was suppose to start classes Saturday, he carries his BCD, regs and gauges to have them put the package together. They charged him $70 to put it together, and told him that since they sell Aqualung, if the regs need any parts, they would have to order them. He told them that if they need parts to let him know and he will send them back to Leisure Pro to be repaired under warranty. Today, they call him and tell him he will not be able to use the BCD because no one there knows how to instruct on it. I told him to get his money back, tell The Dive Shop in Memphis to kiss it and we'll find someone else to train him alot cheaper than $800. Is this common practice? Is this just this shop (SSI affiliated) or are they just mad because we didn't buy Aqualung equipment from them.

Do yourself a favor and get your money back. With any luck the management will change their attitude or a new buyer should be along soon because they won't survive from that level of service.

It's my LDS too and a huge one for this area. I'm taking TDI Deco Procedures from them in 2 weeks. They are pretty much an Aqualung shop. I have bought a bunch of stuff from them including 2 Apeks regs, 2 Suunto Cobras and my DH bought a Transpac. They have always worked on my Zeagle and Mares regs purchased elsewhere. They're quite reasonable when you buy some gear from them. I don't buy all of it from them and they know that. It is true that they will not let you use the pool without servicing your reg. They like to teach in back-inflated BCs (for whatever reason) and the student gear is Seaquest/Aqualung. The instruction there is top notch, however.

Doh...I hate it when that happens...:confused_

Hmmm...

Their boat and pool, their call.

Depending on the mask, fins, snorkel and wetsuit, $800 is reasonable.

$70 sounds about right, the facilities, tools, ability and time all cost the shop money, why should you get it for free? They were even up-front about limited availability of parts.

I wouldn't teach anyone in an airtrim either!

[tantrum]uhhhhh, my LDS doesn't like me trying to screw them over[/tantrum]

Knowing their instructors, they probably hate the idea of instructing someone in one of those wrap around, integrated things. No offense intended.

It's amazing how some places stay in business. Definitely get a new shop and before giving them any money find out the real out the door cost for training. Costs can include (but sure isn't limited to)
1. Texts
2. Gear rental
3. Gear purchase
4. Inflated open water trip cost
5. Inflated referral cost.
6. Fees for extra pool time.
7. Fees for "certifying" gear purchased elsewhere.
