The built in fans are usually pretty aggressive. Unless the compressor is located in an enclosed area that needs to be aired out, I don't see much benefit from another fan while running. And while its running... more air the better

The garage is pretty full (car, motorcyle, a ton of tech diving gear and tanks, compressor, fridge, chest freezer, etc.). As a result, the area I do fills in is about 6'x5'. Plenty within the recommended minimum of 3'x3'x3' clearance around the compressor. To just be conservative, I've placed a box fan blowing so that it's hitting the side of the compressor and blowing the hot air side out of the area the compressor is working in. I just started doing that today. I'm leaving that fan running during operation of the compressor and during breaks between fills. It can't hurt I figure...The built in fans are usually pretty aggressive.
