That is a shame. You work all year for a trip and something like this happens.

Hi all,
This happened a while back but after reading some recent posts I thought I should post this story. In summer 2007 2.5yrs after cert for me and first dive out of OW for buddy we went on a Carnival cruise and booked a dive through them (spare me the "don't book through cruise speeches I Know Now). Well i was excited about the dive in Costa Maya and didn't think much about it. We boarded the dive boat

Dive boats sink every now and then. It's not all that uncommon. Mine sank on Grenada. At least one sank on Cozumel recently (maybe two, hard to keep track). They're great for practicing rescue skills, although eveybody doesn't share my opinion. :D

FWIW, you need to have whatever skills and equipment you need to survive as well as be rescued any time you get on a dive boat. Generally speaking, this would minimally be a large Surface Marker Buoy, a flaslight and a whistle. I also carry a strobe and air horn.

Hey Tiger, boats do sink, I lost one of my 25'ers on the Cameron jetties Nov of '92---but, replace them is all you can do.....

btw, we down, but not out :)---hopefully LM can leave out SOON, lol

Thank you for the post. I'm glad you were not hurt. Did Carnival Cruise line refund your money?

Yes, Carnival did refund my money. I was hoping they would credit my tab a little more in order to compensate me for the items I lost, but it quickly became evident that it was not going to happen. Bottom line is, when you get on a boat, expecially In Mexico, you need to be pretty self relient and do not trust that all safety features are in place and waiting.

You might be better served to purchase one of those self inflating vests they sell at the Bass Pro Shops. It looks like a tube, not so garrish as a snorkel vest, smaller, and does the same job..And looks quite "Dandy" too. LoL

No life jackets on the boat at all, or they didn't have time to get them out?

I like to wear one on any moving small boat, or while walking around even a large liveaboard, so I have taken to wearing my own snorkel vest to avoid having to request one. I get some looks and words, but I do it.
