Sounds like you did great under the circumstances! I guess it was an express dive but much more experience that the number of minutes can describe. It's too bad they took you to a site like that. The idea should be to have you relax and enjoy yourself, esp. not to create a reaction like the wife's "never again!".

My 2nd dive for certification was about 12 mins. The instructor's (one of several on site) very unhappy girlfriend showed up on site, apparently wanted him to be somewhere else IMMEDIATELY and stood there with her arms crossed and a stoney face while we went diving. The foolish man circled back that fast. Can't imagine why; I'm sure I was vastly more pleasant company :-D

Ah, what we men sometimes do in the interest of domestic tranquility......
I don't blame the dive OP for what happened or her stress. We were warned of the conditions before we went out and the explanation of the conditions was accurate.
I blame the husband. He lied to the Op and put his wife in danger. Personally, I've snorkeled in water as bad or worse. I was fine at the surface and actually had very little stress from that. I enjoyed what I did get to do. The drifting part was wonderful. I look forward to that again soon.

My first post cert dive was 23 mins, I was quite nervous in front of my coworkers who had been diving for a few months so I churned through all of my air!! Things have drastically improved, I'm the only person regularly diving these days though! It gets better the more you stick with it, keep enjoying the water
The longest I've been under so far is 35 minutes. I did a resort dive in Cabo San Lucas last September at Pelican Rock. It was an amazing experience! However, I did not know what I didn't know. Now that I do, I realize how dumb resort dives are! We were down as far as 40ft with no training other than that received in the pool. There was no concept of buddy'ing up with someone and one guide had four people with no proper training or experience at all. When you're on the one side of Pelican Rock it drops down to well over 80'. Scary stuff now that I know what I didn't know.
I look forward to coming over to your side of the planet someday.

Hmmph....Another story like that. Lost count of the number I've heard about resort/Discover Scuba disasters waiting to happen if not already.

I went with Cabo Adventures last year, we dove in the same area. It was a good dive, my first experience with both current and surge. We went down about 65 feet (according to our divemaster), even though my gauge said 76 feet. I am going back in a couple of weeks and would like to see something else, possibly dive a bit deeper. Anyone have suggestions?
