I eventually found my exit point after a good bit of searching and managed to get out.

Did you effectively dive solo, at night without a light while looking for your exit point? Or, did you surface and swim to the exit point?

Were you in OW the entire time? Making a blacked out ascent with no reference can be quite disconcerting to say the least, so good on you finding the up line and managing to keep a cool head.
