My experience with DSS.

That's one of the reasons why I think I'm going to stay away from DIR. Any method that starts off stating that everything else that has ever been done is wrong, is bogus to me. Reminds me of Heaven's Gate, more kool-aid please!

Don't hold it against him. Designers and engineers can be very opinionated about design details especially when they feel they have the better product. There are reasons that they design products the way they do and are pround of their work. It's because they really believe it is better.

I have the DSS and love it. I've talked to both Tobin and Al and have been helped by both. And I happen to agree with them that they have great ideas designed into their products.

If you've had a 'try it out' offer from Tobin, try to take him up on it. I've no regrets whatsoever with my purchase. In fact, I'll be getting another wing very soon. Haven't decided which specific model to get but I've already decided where it's coming from.

I was lurking on these forums and had seen plenty of positive reviews of the DSS rig and decided to go that route, ...

First impression was awesome, I thought this to be a very high quality piece of equipment. After 9 or so dives on it I had a small problem which I will clarify had nothing to do with DSS or the quality of the product but nevertheless it needed to return to DSS for a quick fix. Tobin called me up to discuss and gave me several options and had it turned around to me right away. My experience with him was very positive he is quite a stand up guy.

Suffice to say I am very happy with my purchase and look forward to diving it for some time to come.

You will likely love it even more with each dive, midnite135. Having thoroughly enjoyed over 250 dives with my DSS BP/W, single-tank rig, I could offer a long list of reasons that I would buy it again tomorrow if necessary.

But you'll build your own list over your next couple of hundred dives... Have a great time!!

Oh... I can't resist: The design is sleek and efficient. This rig holds any of my tanks, from the tiny HP80 to the perfect HP130, with absolute steadiness. I wear it comfortably with both my 7mm wet suit or a dry suit (either crushed neoprene or trilam.) It has functioned perfectly in two high-level diving courses I've taken this year. The workmanship has been spotless on my rig... and as you found out, Tobin stands behind the gear 100%.
Both he and Al Bane were very generous with their time, energy and knowledge last year when I was shopping for a BP/W. I walked into the shop with many skeptical questions, and they answered them all with understanding and patience. And all the information they offered turned out to be exactly right in my ensuing experiences.

And, at least one Giant Black SeaBass inspected it up-close and carefully, deciding it offered a great place to hang out for about 20 minutes. :sappy:

That's the wrong reason ... (by the way, I felt exactly as you do at about your experience level).

I would counsel you to withold judgment until you get to actually meet and dive with some DIR-trained divers. Most aren't as bad as the Internet conversations make them out to be ... and they make great mentors.

But yeah ... take a pass on the kool-aid ... they won't hold it against ya ...

I was lurking on these forums and had seen plenty of positive reviews of the DSS rig and decided to go that route, to be fair to my dive shop I let them know what I was desiring and give them a shot at an alternate product but they did me one better when they couldnt turn me they contacted DSS and for very similar pricing I was able to get it through my LDS.

I think your LDS has worked extra hard to earn and keep your business. I hope you return the favor.

I'll second Bob on this one-the whole DIR/internet thing distorts the reality I've experienced. I've met DIR divers that are both great mentors and fast becoming good friends, I feel lucky to learn from them.

Although, personally, I find kool-aid refreshing . . . Lynne, when are you getting back from Europe?
