Alright, it's official so I am not worried about jinxing myself.

My job transfer has come thru, flights are booked and now it is just waiting 10 more days before I am on my way.

I arrive on 9/2 and will be temporarily staying at the Hyatt in Ka'anapali. I am hoping to do some diving on 9/3, is anyone going to be around that would like to get together?

Also, I am shipping my vehicles over there and I was reading that they need to go thru an inspection station to get licensed. Any idea what that entails?

Hey Socal-

Welcome to Hawaii! It's been a while since I've "seen" you around the board - but I don't get out to the other forums much. It's not like before - it would take me all day to go through all the new posts, instead of just an hour or so each morning.

Anyway, I think what they mean by inspection station is where you take your car to get a safety inspection and sticker. Usually it's a service station or somewhere that has an automotive department like Sears. It's a yearly thing and you need to show registration and insurance at the time of inspection.

For you, I'm not exactly sure whether you have to transfer registration first or get the safety inspection first. If you're not sure you can always check out the Maui County website: http://www.co.maui.hi.us/departments/MotorVehicles/

Hey Chepar, thanks for the info. I been doing some research but that was one of the few things I couldn't find much stuff on.

Like you, I don't spend that much time on here anymore. I have a few topics of interest that I glance thru and that's about it.

Nice hearing from you

I'd probably be up for a dive on Sep 3 -- shoot me a PM when it's a little closer and we'll try to work something out.

As for licensing -- there are a bunch of vehicles I've seen driving around here for months with out-of-state license plates, primarily California and Alaska. I've known people that have brought vehicles from both places and they've been in no rush to get stuff transferred... perhaps relax on that a little and I can put you in touch with them once you're here.

One thing about changing your licensing to Hawaii is that the resale value of your car will drop (apparently). People here are known for not taking good care of their vehicles and yet the mileage is really low (where are you going to go on an island?)... so holding off a little bit might be a good plan unless you're here for life.

Thanks Kris,

I will shoot you a PM towards the end of next week and we can see how things stack up. I plan on being there for a long time so if it doesn't work then I am sure we will have many opportunities in the coming months.

Thanks for the other info as well. With only visiting the island for a week each year I never really paid any attention to license plates so it is comforting to know I don't have to rush into it. From the sounds of things my old truck should blend right in to the woodwork. It isn't pretty but it gets me where I want to go and it is great for hauling gear.
