I have relatives in Pinehurst, which is a bit closer to Wilmington. Last time I flew in to Raleigh but I plan to fly into Charlotte in the future. Is the diving comparable or should I take the extra time to drive to Morehead City?

Fish - I don't think you will leave either place disappointed. The difference in driving time from Charlotte is enough that I would pick Wilmington over MHC, from Raleigh it is a draw. You will see the same marine life and face about the same boat times in either location. The wrecks for the most part are similar enough in nature that, unless you are really familiar, you will not notice the difference. Take the shorter drive and enjoy your visit.

Can I get recommendations on dirt-cheap accommodations in Wilmington and Morehead City areas?

Any motels where they aren't selling drugs in the parking lot or making porno films in the room next door are fine. I usually camp or stay in hostels when I dive, so anywhere that I won't get robbed or catch social diseases are fine.

In Morehead City, if you are diving with Discovery or Olympus, they have bunk house accomodations that are dirt cheap. I think they run something like $20-25 per person, per night. You have to share a bathroom, but it is with other divers.

This is what I wanted, spot on. Anything similar in Wilmington?

I don't know of any diver bunks in Wilmington, but Wilmington is a big enough town that you will catch some price relief if you're willing to get away from the water and back into town a bit. There are some shady parts of town though (as with any town that size). Summer tourist season makes things expensive closer to the beach.

The Olympus lodge is a fantastic deal for someone like you.

While not dirt cheap like the Olympus bunkhouse, there's a decent KOA in Wilmington that's near Aquatic Safaris.
