Well, a few of us here have dived around the world and keep diving Monterey and Carmel, FWIW. What is there to see? What do you want to see? Marine mammals? Fish? Hydrocoral and lots of color? Occasional sharks and rays?

Here's some pics. There are more in my scubaboard gallery, whenever that comes back up.

Can anyone describe Monterey diving. Recommend it? Thanks.

have dove the philippines!!! the channel islands!!! the puget sound!!! the north coast!!! still dive monterey and carmel just about every other weekend!!!!!!!!!!! monterey rocks!!!!!

it is not warm water diving, takes more gear, but it works

And kelp forests! Sea lions that come right up to your face to check out who you are, crabs, nudis, scallops, lots of cod.

A tough question. You’re sure to have some excellent responses here and you could locate more experiences from various publications. The comments about crabs, sea lions, fishes, cold water gear, etc. are all very accurate and awesome to see first-hand. And, with all due respect, we could write volumes and still just scratch the surface of a Monterey dive experience.

Another perspective is the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s website:

If you decide to dive here in Monterey, you can find some excellent dive buddies here on ScubaBoard.

I agree with MontereyCADiver. I drive 5 hours every chance I get to dive Monterey. It is completley different from So Cal and I enjoy it so much up there. The vis is not usually as good as the Channel Islands... but I have seen 60+. The boats are great, Pt. Lobos is a great(one of the best beach dives in CA.) and Monestary is one of the most memorable dives I have done.

When I played Pebble Beach I thought the view from the golf course to the ocean was to die for, but when I started diving Carmel Bay I found the best view is from the water to the golf course.

And then how about all of the great places to eat......

I have taken several of my fellow So Cal instructors there and we now rate Monterey as one of our favorite dive spots period....

Hope to see you there
