Breakwater's a great starting point. There's even a dive shop right there.
It's pretty easy to just follow the breakwater, but I did lose it once on a night dive.

There are three shops in Monterey (I might be wrong, I think the rest closed, this winter was tough) - Aquarius, Aquarius II (aquaregia mentioned this shop), Bamboo Reef
I love Bamboo Reef shop for both air and nitrox. If you are new to the area, there are tons of great divers in this forum who can dive with you and show you some treasures - Monterey is nice, Carmel is nicer if you are lucky, there were few days this spring when we got 70ft+ visibility. I usually dive during week, PM me if you are interested.
