Well, reefrat, you need to get your Aqua Master going then and retrieve it from that suitcase in Australia. The RAM is very quiet on both inhalation and exhalation. It is kinda funny to see the look on the fish, yes, fish have expressions, when they turn around and their I am, whoa, where did you come from. They are accustomed to the noisy single hose crap bubble makers.

The rebreather is the ultimate solution for quietness I suppose but like you say, they are just not there yet, need a little more development. I don't get to dive enough these days to warrant the expense and hassle. That may change on several accounts in the not terribly distant future.

Besides, rebreathers create a whole bunch of new ways to kill you - while a double hose reg is low tech, very reliable and very low maintenence.

As noted above, because of the bubble diffusion that occurs, they are comparatively quiet. When taking macro photos, I have found that fish often use me to hide behind to peek at the bubbles - which puts them right in front of me.
